Question about Computers & Internet

2 Answers

I have an IBN Thinkpad. I do not know what kind but the type number is 2374. I have a router that I am using to connect to the internet on the lap top. It was working but now it is not. I just went through everything with the router people and they told me to tell you that it is already connected to the network but I am unable to browse. They suggested I ask you how to uninstall and then reinstall the browser.

I did what the first guy said and downloaded mozilla fox onto a scan disc, then put it on the lap top. It downloaded fine but when I went to open it up it said check the proxy settings to make sure they are correct, Contact your network administrator to make sure the proxy server is working. I do I check the proxy settings or how do I contact the network administrator.

1) Most probably there is a firewall which blocks browsing. Temporarly disable the firewall on your PC if there is one.
2) Check with your network people if you need to enter a "proxy" server (in internet network settings in browser)
3) check your network connectivity. Press "Start" then "execute program", enter "cmd". A black DOS box will come up. Enter "ipconfig". This shows your network adress. If it is any other then then your network is working and you have an IP adress. This is the basic for everything else.

Lets see if we can narrow the field a bit.
On your Laptop Open a command prompt and type "ping" with out the quotes.
If it works you should get a response with details about how fast it is.
This means that you are in fact connected to the internet. if it doesn't work then the browser is not your problem.

Next try "ping"
If that works then DNS is working. Again if not the browser is not your problem.

Still in a command prompt type "ipconfig /all > c:\ipconfig.txt"
This will create a text file in the top of your C: drive with the configuration information of your network adapter. Open that file with notepad then copy and past the contents here. I or someone else will be able to help you diagnose the information in that file.

If you really do want to reinstall your browser you will need to download the install files which will be a little difficult if you don't have an internet connection. Do you have another pc you can use to download a new browser. If your current browser is Internet Explorer then you don't need to uninstall it. Download something else like Mozilla Firefox. You can install it as well as Internet Explorer. If you need to download at a friends place just use a USB key or burn a CD to transfer the files. Let us know how you get on and post any error messages you get from the ping commands.

The output of the ipconfig command goes to a file in C:\ it is named ipconfig.txt but if the ping commands both work then there probably isn't a problem with your network connection.

You can go to this site and download a the install files for firefox which is an alternative browser from Internet Explorer.

This will download a file which you will need to copy to your Laptop. You can move it there any way you like by burning it onto a CD or putting it on a USB drive or by using your local network. Once you have the file on your laptop just double click it and follow the instructions. I use FireFox all the time without any problems.

I think you might have closed the issue before I was finished.
Perhaps you already sorted it out?

Anyway here is the additional information I wanted to tell you.

You will probably find that FireFox has imported your proxy settings from IE and therefore copied your problem. In most cases you don't need to configure a proxy server and setting "no proxy" is probably the best. It may have been a virus or something that changed your proxy setting in the first place. Anyway in Firefox goto the Tools drop down menu and pick Options. Then click on Advanced catergory and then network tab and then the settings button. Make sure that the "no proxy" radio button is set. You should be able to configure IE in the same way but the location will be slightly different.

    Hope this helps

I have a 2wire gateway modem/router and i need to reset it, but i dont have the default password located on the bottom of the modem/router because it fell off. I need to find out what the default password...

Open your Internet browser.
Type into the browser's address line.
You should see your key on the setup page.

Back-Up Key Codes

In most cases, you will receive a key code from your ISP. This key code is used to activate the 2Wire gateway. If you did not receive a key code, you can use the key codes provided in the following table.

If your Internet Service Provider did not provide you with

a user name, password, or IP address to set up your

Internet connection, your broadband connection most

likely uses DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol)

and you should use this key code.

If your Internet Service Provider gave you a PPPoE

username and password to set up your Internet

connection, your broadband connection uses Point-to-

Point Protocol over Ethernet and you should use this key

If your Internet Service Provider assigned you an IP

address to set up your Internet connection, your

broadband connection uses static IP (Internet Protocol)

and you should use this key code.

If your Internet Service Provider gave you a PPPoA

username and password to set up your Internet

connection, your broadband connection uses Point-to-

Point Protocol over ATM. In this case, you would use this

key code and Microsoft Dial-up Networking to connect to

the Internet.

The same model ThinkPad can have different types of network, video and audio drivers and unless you know exactly which one is installed in your ThinkPad, you need to download all the drivers and install each driver until you find the right driver.

When you download the drivers, write down the device driver and it's file name so you have a record of which driver you are installing and which directory the unzipped files are located on your hard drive.

Go to the IBM/Lenovo WEB site - support/download page and download the latest Windows XP or Vista device drivers for your model computer, Use this link: -
You can download the various drivers and then you click on and run the various driver files, they will then unzip and expand into a sub folder on C:\drivers Then install the various drivers from this folder (run the set-up file).

Belkin router wifi with i phone and g1 will not connect the lap

this is because of the security type WPA enabled in the router...youo can login to router setup page by typing in the internet on security (found in the left side, if it asks for password leave it blank and click submit) and change the security type to wep64bit and type any 10digit number as your password in key1...dont type anything other than that in any other on apply changes...
now scan and connect your network from iphone and enter security key and login....
also delete the preferred networks from your laptop and scan and connect again....

rate me if it is useful....

Installed belkin router for my lap top - doesnt work

Thanks for using Fixya!

You have the right gizmo there. You just need to set it up correctly. If you are in the US contact belkin @ 1 800 223 5546.

You need to know your ISP type first before trying to contact them. Know if you have a PPPoE (High speed DSL with password) Dynamic IP internet (no user name or password required to connect to the internet, usually used by cable internet providers)

After you find the right information just contact belkin and they will assist you with the proper router usage.

Have a great day.

Cannot install D-Link router

1. check your wireless adapter TCP/IP settings if its set into "Obtain as IP address Automatically".
2. if the settings is set as Automatic and your not getting IP address then select "Use the following IP Address"
3. use IP address followed to your router address like if192.168.0.1 in router type or192.168.0.3 just check the next address IP in your network.
4. after typing subnet IP will automatically set
5. type the router IP address as your default gateway
6. click OK to save your new settings

Hope this will help

Internet connection randomly dies

When you connected to the internet via wireless, click start, click run, when box appears type CMD then press enter, when black screen appears, tupe in IPCONFIG then look for the word gateway below it will have a set of numbers at the side of it like copy them down, next open the internet explorer and in the address bar type in the numbers with a dot in-between them three dots in total then press enter, your router settings will open up on screen, look for the wireless tab then have a look for what the time out settings are set for and change them for 99 minutes, sometime they are factory set for 10 min idle time then turn you off. When you have changed to 99 Mins apply / save changes then switch off the router only for 10 seconds then turn back on, then turn off your lap top and then restart it after 10 seconds,
let me know??
