Left meter problem in Nakamichi cassette deck .

I have a Nakamichi 500 Dual Tracer Cassette Deck. The deck has a problem inwhich the left db meter starts twitching near 0db after turn on. The right db meter goes through the normal movement after turn on (quickly goes to the right, then slowly decays to the left) while the left meter is still twitching near 0db. Left channel sound is distorted. What is the problem and the fix?

I once had the same problem with a philips deck, except that both meters were twitching and both channels were distorted.

And guess what - it started happening when i reassembled it after i oiled the motor axis as it was a bit noisy.

No, that doesn't mean this had anything to do with the motor, but i had to disassemble the deck once more, i moved the wires and connectors a bit and the meters and outputs returned to normal functioning, so my guess is that there is a bad connection somewhere.

Try disconnecting the connectors inside the deck, see if the contact pins are dirty or oxydized, if so, clean them and reconnect - this might help.

Also check for any broken or shorted wires, broken insulation on wires and bad solder contacts.

I don't know if this will help, it sure did in my case, but i guess it's worth trying.

good luck

My technics cassette deck tr575 everything seems to work all the functions all the buttons but when I put a cassette tape in the unit I see no responce on the db meter... Everything is functioning on

There are 2 long switches, maybe 4" long, called record/play switches. These can certainly cause this. Try cleaning them with the power unplugged. You would turn the cassette deck on end, so the switches are vertical. Use LPS-1 or LPS-2, and spray a very small amount in the end. Work the switch back and forth and see if that helps. Good luck.

My Nakamishi Cassette Deck 2 is eating tape. It switches off when it does, but how can I fix this? From the look of it this cassette deck has the same cassette drive as the DR-8. Is that correct?

It could be the take up spindle does not have enough torque causing the tape to bunch up after the capstan. If you open up the unit you will notice ether belts or rollers for the tape drive. If it has belts you can replace the belt after cleaning the pulleys. If it has rollers you may be able to clean them with a rubber cleaner (not alcohol which will dry the rubber and cause glazing). Make sure the capstan and the pinch roller is clean using a rubber revitalizing cleaner on the pinch roller. "Goof off" from a hardware store is great for the capstan if it has a lot of metal oxide on it.

Left deck doesn't "play" anymore.

There is a mechanism problem in the Pinch Roller part of the deck.
It needs to be looked at by a Technician to correct.

Nakamichi CR-4 Only Recording on One Channel...need help!

Hmmm.....heres a really stupid question but........is the head clean ? There may be a bit of oxide shorting the one side of the head out. Try cleaning the head with a q-tip and some 99% pure isopropyl alcohol. If you have done that ( you seem to be more knowledgeable than most ), I would suspect either the circuit that drives the right channel record head, or the head itself. Is the head running flat against the tape?. Is there a record/play relay or record relay somewhere in the circuit ?. I think at this point you really need a schematic. Do you have the AC oscillator signal ( bias ) present on the right record head ?. I would try this first, then look into a manual.......Good luck...Rob

Denon DRW-585 dual-cassette deck makes clicking sound

There is an outside chance your tape cassett has a static charge. Tape in plastic case of cassette can build up significant electrical static which can partially discharge as tape is run. It can sound like random thumps, ticks, pops ect. Wrap cassette in a damp (not dripping wet) cloth, for several hours, then try again. This can also happen to the reels and drive rollers of the deck
