Question about Mastercool 67680 Evaporative Cooler Air Conditioner

Water pump size and over saturated pads

Just had to replace the water pump to my mastercool, now it smells like fish! I thought that bigger was better so i went from 7000gpm to 7500gpm. Could this be the problem since the pads are becoming saturated and not having a chance to evaporate? It has been more humid lately and maybe the is a coincedence? Maybe I should go to an even smaller unit (500gpm). I have the smaller mastercool. It makes sense that they need to get wet AND evaporate for proper cooling, duh! Just wanted to double check with someone who may know for sure. Thanks, Louis

Louis, The cooling does not come from the volume of water running over the pads. It cools by cooling the air passing through the wet pads. So, Yours is an impeccably logical argument that leads to a false conclusion. Bigger is not better in this caThe fishy smell is from the matting (pads) when kept saturated, Molds and algae will form if there is too much water also.. Best you get the original size pump Good luck and stay cool - Ned

Can you put essential oils in water to make pads smell better?

You can use any kind of fragrance to water to make it smell better but the real issue is why is it stinking in the first place. Normally if everything is working correctly there would be no stinky problem. Is there standing water somewhere or is the unit not functioning properly??? Need to search and find out using Bing or Google and see what the real problem is. Or you can just cover up the odor with whatever oil or spray but be careful that it doesn't effect the use of the machine or it's parts.

Have mastercool MC6300 unit; what size pump is appropriate?? I put in brand new pads but now the 1100cpm pump seems to be delivering too much water - water overflowing sides and ends of pads.

Hi, what I would do if this is the pump it came with, is to cut back on the water pressure at the valve, and adjust the float. If it continues, pick up a smaller pump, 800 cfm. That should do it.

I need some help knowing the pump I need

Since adobe air is out of business, you will have to make one of the dial 230 volt pumps fit in its place. I cut a little notch into the media support tray to fit mine.
As far as the pump size goes, the orange 230 volt is somewhere around 11'000cfm or bigger and works just fine in my precooler.

New Mastercool pads smell bad

The cellulose pads in a mastercool are glued together and usually the adhesive is what you smell. It may take a while for it to go away. Strange as it may seem, as the pads get more mineralization and you use it more the smell will go away. Do not use a cooler for your whole house without plenty of exhaust through a window or an updux. Coolers work best when there is plenty of freely moving air.

Water pump not coming on

Does the pump turn by hand? Bearing seized up will stop the pump.

Open the bottom of the pump and spin the impellers if it wont spin just replace the water pump with one of correct size and voltage.

Is voltage getting to the pump motor? A bad switch can cause this.

Hope this helps please rate me as high as you can and thanks for using fix ya.

AC pad not fully getting saturated with water

1. Make sure the pump is getting plenty of water.

2. Make sure the pump is working.

3. Check the pvc pipe with drip holes are not plug. (above the pads )

4. Check the pads directional arrow that should be facing up. When pads are initially installed you can see arrows on the pads. The arrows should be in the up direction. That will allow the pads to get saturated more efficiently.

I hope these steps help you.

Summer

If it was not drained for winter, do so and then remove all scale from the pan, pump inlet screen, etc. Replace the pads if they are scaled up and remove any scale from the louvered panels. WITH THE POWER OFF, check the belt for cracking and check to drive motor and blower wheel bearings for smooth operation, oil bearings with oil ports. With clean water in the sump, a good drive belt, clean pump screen and clean pads, the unit is ready to power up and run test the float action/shut-off, water distribution through the arms, belt tension (just enough to prevent slipping). These units work best when they can fully evaporate the water, so let the air flow out as fast as it come into the cooled space to maximize the evaporative effect. Also note, these unit must be level to work properly.
