No display on Robertshaw 9600; unit seems dead/furnace works

We have two zones and this thermostat is in the zone which is hardly ever used. I know because of the other zone that the heater works fine.

I noticed the Lo Battery reading and changed the batteries on the ''dead'' 9600. After this there was no display at all. I don't know how to test these things and was thinking about just buying a new 9600 and replace the old one following the existing wiring.

Does anyone know how to troubleshoot an issue like this where the furnace works but the thermostat appears dead?

Thanks!

Thanks, James, this is what I'm going to do.BTW, I changed the batteries twice just to make sure.

Thanks, Russ. I replaced the thermostat today and everything works great! You were right about the display --I accidentally hit the on button on the old unit and the furnace fired up. It was a bad display.

    Thanks!

Hmm. I don't think it posted the first time around. So I'll try again.

There is a temperature sensing diode on the back side of this thermostat's circuit board. This diode may have failed or become disconnected.

I'd lean towards its having become disconnected, as I've been inside an example of this Robertshaw (originally Maple/Chase) 9600 thermostat and noticed that the soldering on this part was of poor quality. So if you have a soldering iron, and know how to use it, you could probably fix it.

I have a web page (just the facts, no ads, malware or fluff) that talks of some other common problems with this thermostat and how to fix them:

My thermostat

Maple chase is the same I believe.Sounds like the thermostat is bad.I personally think the Honeywell 3000-4000 series thermostat are better. But the Maple should work!

Thermostat shows error on unused zone

You will need to take the inside cover down on the front air conditioner. There is a control box mounted there, open the control box and you should see many dip switches on the face of the board. Make sure that Zone 1 and Zone 2 are selected (furnace as well if your furnace is fed through this thermostat). After making sure that the switches are set, turn off the thermostat and hold down the mode and zone buttons at the same time, turn the tstat back on. When EE appears on the face, release the buttons and see if everything works. If not, then I would say that you have a bad control unit in the air conditioner.

Warm air rises and if the upstairs thermostat is on it will onerride to lower the temp upstairs. To have the dowstairs thermostat govern, the up stairs must be off . The whole house will balance to the controlling thermostat.

No heat in zone with Honeywell rth230B

It is not your thermostat, it is an airbound zone. The gurgly noise you heard was that water and air flowing through the radiator. The zone needs to be purged either at the boiler, or through vents on the radiator. Hope this helps
