Question about GE Spacemaker JVM1640SJ Microwave Oven

1 Answer

XL1800 still works fine but makes a lot of noise while on.

XL1800 still works fine but makes a lot of noise when heating. It's a rattling type noise like something would sound if a fan was going bad. It's not the vent fan, it is while heating.

It may be the stirrer in the ceiling area.

May Spacemaker XL1800 stop heating food. Was working fine. Then just stop

Is this an over the stove type unit? I have had a few problems with my over the range spacesaver. I think the heat from cooking gets up into the microwave and damages it. The steam from me boiling things on the stove had mine quit heating and I purchased a new one. The parts to replace the faulty ones can be quite expensive over $150.00, so its better to purchase a new microwave.

If the magnetron was making louder noises prior then replace the magnetron. While the cabinet is open make sure to look for burned wires, check the continuity of thermal cutoffs, and check the main circuit-board for burned traces or components. The relays in most electronics are known for arcing (spot welding) and staying in the wrong position. Tap them hard with the back end of a screwdriver.
You may have to replace the capacitor as well. During all of this use safe electrical practices by having the power cord unplugged. The capacitor could still have a high charge on it so be careful.

I have a ge above range spacemaker xl1800 it seems to work fine except their is a rattling noise when its running it sounds like a bad fan or something comeing loose it seems like its comeing from under...

The noise you are hearing is due to the fan. The fan is used to cool the magnetron during cooking, and because this fan is not working the magnetron is overheating and the thermal protector is opening, killing power to the unit. All you need to fix this is a new fan blade. The fan blade(look for part #80) is slipping on the motor shaft ( the noise you are hearing).

GE XL 1800

If the blade is broken then you can buy a new one from---

GE Spacemaker XL1800 does not heat. All other functions appear to be working normally, the light comes on and the turntable functions. When turned on, it makes a humming noise slightly louder than normal,...

Possible bad heating element, You should remove the cover of the unit and look at the heating element with the power off. Until you get your problem resolved I would recommend not to even turn it on due to the fact that you are unsure what is going on and you smelt some burnt smell. Just for safety until you fine the problem

Constant rattling noise during operation

possibly the "stirrer" motor - this is in the top and turns a metal reflecting ring to disperse the microwaves around the oven more evenly. About $70 on GE site for my oven.

Scary buzzing sound, no heat

The scary noise is coming from the transformer (big heavy steel thing under the magnatron) that steps up the voltage for it. Something is overloading it causing it to have way too big of a magnetic field causing it to vibrate so much it makes noise. Since you have ruled out the magnatron (which almost always is the culprit) it could be the high voltage diode, or high voltage cap (more likely). Replace those two and it should work. Microwaves are nice to work on cause its a simple circuit and they usually give you a schematic pasted on the inside.

Turntable does not turn and fan won't exhaust

The second problem is probably defective door switches, or it may be a problem with the control panel, which we repair nationwide for only $32.50. On my Web site, I have info on safety, disassembly, and diagnosing and replacing door switches: Running it empty has damaged the magnetron. It will work for a while, but it will eventually have to be replaced. A good parts source is here:
