format it with windows.the pop up is a warning that the drive is either corrupted or failing.if corrupted.get all of you data(music, video, pictures, ect off onto another drive and format it.)to format it plug it and open my computer.go to the drive and right click it.in the sub menu click format(to foramt it you have to be administrator)(also be sure backup all of your music, videos, pictures, and anything that you want to save.)if this don't work use a xp installation disk and try the partion formater.stop it before it start to copy the files.if none of this work then the drive is going bad

Get some recovey software to get your data, that might work, or bring it to a recovey centre

By deleting the windows partition, you may have deleted the windows compatibility. You can try and reformat a partition of the drive to a windows FAT32 I believe, but you may lose your other data.

How do i delete the hp recovery partition on my maxtor one touch. i am trying to use swissknife to change to fat32 and it says it cant because the maxtor contains recovery files. i thought i cleared it...

I guess you wish to reformat the entire drive? OK you must mount the drive with a partition manager, then you must delete all/any partitions. Then reallocate a NEW partition, 0 to the end cylinder number, format the partition and set it to Active. You should be all OK.
The HP recovery is in a "Hidden Partition" so it can't normally be seen, all that HP does to "Restore" stuff is to mark that partition as active on boot up and the software runs when it boots to that partition.
The only way to rid it is to completely "Flatten" the drive, IE: Removal of every and all partitions and reallocate space to a new one.

Won't fully boot. Get windows screen, then it stalls gray

reformated twice? have you already ran diagnostics on the hdd? check first the hdd thru diagnostics it might the hdd causing the problem. if no errors found in hdd make sure it was reformated as clean install. your hdd might have partition and just reinstalled OS on he same partition without deleting partitions. Try deleting partitions then create new partitions then reinstall OS.

The controller of the Hard disk enclosure is probably dead. Also check that the hard disk is formatted and activated as a partition.

He safetydrill shows in the window but when i click on autorun, it says it doesnt know what application to use, i am trying to install the maxtor one touch 4 on a mac

"Autorun" is a Windows package. You don't need to use any of that stuff on a Macintosh.
Just launch Disk Utility from Applications/Utilities, use the Partition section to define one partition in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format with the volume name of your choice. In about ten seconds, you will have a perfectly working Mac OS external drive. (If you don't do this, the drive will still appear to work, but will still be in a Windows format, which can cause certain types of data loss on Macintosh files.)

Maxtor hard drive

Yes it can,

The drive will have to have the current partition removed and be re-partitioned and reformatted then it will be ready for use.

If you need more info regarding the procedure, reply here with your operating system and I can give you a little more info.
