i hope that this really helps you out

Are you using a VOIP service or have you moved the answering machine from one country to another? If so, then the ring cadence is probably confusing the answering machine. If it's a VOIP service, try to edit it to a more standard ring for your region and it will probably work. If you've moved, you're probably out of luck.
One other possiblity, make sure that you have an outgoing message recorded. This unit won't answer if it's blank.
Make sure the printer is on and is connected to a working phone line.
Make sure that Auto Answer is on.
To check if Auto Answer is on:
From the printer control panel press the wrench sign.
Press the arrow buttons until Fax Setup appears, .
Press the arrow buttons until Ringing and Answering appears, and then press
OK to save the setting.
Press OK again.
Check to see if Auto Answer is set to On.
If Auto Answer is not set to on, press the arrow buttons until On appears, and then
press to save the setting.
Set the number of times the telephone rings before the printer automatically
receives faxes:
Press the arrow buttons until Pick-up On appears, and then press OK .
Press the arrow buttons until the setting that you want appears, and then press to
save the setting.
When the number of rings you set is detected, the printer automatically receives
the incoming fax.
This should solve your problem.
Thanks for using FixYa and for the great rating.

It has always been in the U.S. I bought it new in Iowa, used it several years, then set it aside for several more years. An new outgoing message is recorded on it and plays when I check it. It appears ready to go. I switched the telephone lines just in case thery were reversed. Nothing.
Yes. I had a Qwest land line in Iowa, an AT&T land line here. About as similar as you can get.
