SOURCE: Paper want go in to print

The reason why it keeps saying this is cuz you paper feed tire needs replacing. Now i am not sure based on the cost of this unit if it would be worth to have this repaired but, this is what is causing this error.

Printer is only printing to the bypass tray instead of tray 1 where it should be printing

First, check your printer properties and make sure you are not telling it to go to the bypass tray.

If you are set to auto tray and its still trying to pull out off bypass tray. Check on the copier to make sure tray 1 isn't set for a special type of paper. If it is, change it to plain paper.

Even though my printer settings are set to print and use the paper in tray 1 - the printer wants to pull from the bypass tray (which always pulls crooked). The printer used to work just fine then the alert...

Two things to check for a problem like this:
1) Driver Settings:
If your computer's drivers are telling the machine to pull from the bypass tray it'll ignore the machine settings. You're kind of on your own here figuring it out, if you can't though then try deleting the printer from the computer and re-installing it (will default settings)

2) Manual Feed sensor:
When you put paper into the bypass try you're activating a flag which tells a sensor there's paper there, if this flag is stuck forcing the sensor to constantly think you have paper there it would always to pull from there. Find the flag, move it back and forth, hit it with some air from a can of air.

My printer used to automatically print from the bypass tray if there was paper in it. Now, it still prints from Tray 2 no matter what. How can I change the settings to take from the bypass when it's loaded...

in the menu system of the printer you have to set the tray to "FIRST"
and you have to have a piece of paper loaded in the "bypass" (MANUAL) feed first BEFORE sending the print job.

    Printing from wrong tray

I suffered from the same problem for a long time. We got Xerox Phaser 8550 and 8560 here. I choose on computer "tray 2" but the printer just print from tray 1 which is empty.

Today i figured it out! It's some configuration at the printer. So go to "Paper tray setp" -> "Tray 1 mode" and "Tray 2 mode" -> change to "static".

I figure it's like this. Before it was "dynamic", it probably means the printer decides it's better to use tray 1 even though you choose tray 2 - and this decision is stupid. Changing it to "static" fixes this.

Let me know whether this works for you too!

How do I tell the printer to take from the top tray?

Page 63 of your HP LaserJet 4600dn printer manual:

Controlling print jobs: (condensed version) MS Windows

Three settings affect how the printer driver tries to pull paper when you send a print job. The "Source," "Type," and "Size" settings appear in the Page Setup, Print, or Print Properties dialog boxes in most software programs.

Your question indicates that you wish to configure your printer to take from the top tray. That is a "Source" setting. So in the print Setup or Print Properties dialog box, change the "Source" to Tray 1.

Printing by Source means you choose a specific tray
from which you want the printer to pull paper. The printer tries to print from this tray, no matter what type or size is loaded in it. If you choose a tray that is configured from the embedded Web server for a type or size that does not match your print job, the
printer does not print automatically. Instead, it waits for you to load the tray you chose with the type or size of print media for your print job. If you load the tray, the printer begins printing. If you press the printer tries to print from another tray that has the correct type or size.

Kindly vote for my solution if this info was helpful.

Click File > Print > Properties to check your settings.
To verify that tray 1 is working, put paper in tray 1. Press green check until you see Information Menu. Scroll using arrows until you see Print Menu Map then press green check. If it prints from tray 1, your problem is not with the printer, but with the PC settings.
