Question about Mtd Garden

2006 MTD Yard Machine 38 inch 12.5HP won't start. Replaced ignition switch that was corroded and replaced battery. No power at all. Is there a solenoid switch of some kind that could be bad also? Thanks.

I used a screwdriver and jumped the two contacts on the solenoid and it tried to crank. Not sure why but it would never start, but it would turn over fine. Where does this leave me? Thanks.

Yes - It was in the "on" position. I did not have it held in the "crank" position since that would have required another person holding it there while I jumped the solenoid. Is that what I need to do?

On this mower the solenoid is under the battery compartment in the back. I had to move the battery out of the way and go in through the battery slot. It was not in the dash.

Should be a solonoid under dash when the bonnets open.to check this turn your ignition on start and put a screwdriver from the small wire to the main battery cable going to the starter.if this does not turn the motor over replace the solonoid.if the motor does turn over let me know .

this may be a silly question but did you have the ignition switch on when you bypassed the solonoid

    mark!

thats ok! one more check just to be sure.if you have a multimetre or test light check if you have power at the small terminal on the solonoid, (usually in between the two power terminals) when you turn the key on start.

Start then not start,no power to inestion or starter ,then start and run a while shut it off then wont turn over again

It may be a bad ignition switch, that or a loose or bad electrical connection somewhere. Check for corroded terminals in the power distribution box near the battery. If no help, you may need an electrical diagnosis of the ignition circuit and the ignition switch.
When it won't respond, do lights and other accessories work? If no, it's a main power problem near the battery or distribution box. If yes, it sounds like the ignition switch or the wiring from the switch to the starter or to the ignition system.

2004 buick rendezvous sometimes won't start. clicks but won't turn over. replaced starter, battery, and ignition switch. what now??

We just went through this with our 2003 Rendevous. Clicking like crazy but wouldn't start. Replaced the starter but still doing the same thing. Our next step was going to be replace the battery (which tested well) and the ignition assembly. Out of frustration, I hit the top of the hood and the headlights came on!! Further investigaton proved that the problem was a corroded ground wire on the battery. Hope this helps

Yard machine riding mower will not start

check all of your known safety switches!
Clutch has to be pushed in
seat switch (sit on mower)
blade disengage switch
Finally check your starter soleniod between the battery and the starter and look for fuses and check them out in the process

Changed ignition switch and put a new battery in now it wont even make a sound was working fine before. but old ignition switch had no keys to it. i was starting with a screwdriver.everything is together...

Different switches can have the terminals in the same place but use them differently. Are the terminal labels identical between the two? Hopefully you made a diagram of the wiring before you made changes. If so, make another diagram showing both switches and what terminals connect in each switch position. Are they the same? If not, figure out how to rewire to get the same functionality. The first mistake in troubleshooting is to think you did everything right. We all suffer the illusions created by memory and our senses which is why we have axioms like "measure twice, cut once".
It worked before you replaced the battery and the switch, therefore doing that work created a problem. The switch using its terminals differently would be a good place to look.
Fortunately MTD has manuals and good stuff on their web site at http://www.yardmachines.com or at http://www.mtdproducts.com
