Sounds like the gasket underneath the cover is stopping you. There is only one way.. Brute force. Try going back clockwise again. To avoid breaking it even worse, try putting a flatt piece of metal or long ways on both sides of where you grab with the grips. This will spread the grabing point out and not put so much pressure on one spot. This should avoid cracking. You don't want to pinch it, you want a firm grip on it. Try grabbing it a different way. You still have to apply brute force and move it back and forth untill you get it off. Maybe try and spray some WD-40 on it and let it sit for awhile.
