Check the brush roll ends, make sure they turn freely, if not then replace it. The belt may look ok, but they stretch after a short time and should be replaced.

SOURCE: bissell lift off, brush won't move smell burning rubber belt fine

OK - so your brush roller is jammed. And yes, the belt is melting! Unplug the machine, remove the belt (you will need another new one anyway) then see if you can turn the roller by hand. If it turns freely without you doing anything else, then you may have put the new belt in incorrectly. However, you will probably find you can't turn it, or it's hard work (it should rotate freely). Remove the roller and check the bearings - there may well be something tangled up at one end of the roller. If you can get the roller rotating freely, all should be well.
Good luck

SOURCE: brush will not turn

Possible Solution: I had the same problem with my Powerforce vacuum. Please take note that I AM NOT a vacuum cleaner repairman, nor have I played one on TV. Try taking your beater bar out, and if it looks similar to the one pictured (Model#203-1195), get a cresent wrench. Look at the end of the beater bar one will be squared on the sides to hold the shaft inside statonary. Take the wrench and adjust it to fit the nub on that end. Grab the bar in the center, and turn the end with the wrench. Mine popped and came loose, then it could be turned by hand. A little light oil allowed to run into the end cap, turn it up and spin it a few times to let the oil work down the inside and put it back on. Mine works fine for now. Good Luck!!

SOURCE: BELTLESS BRUSH WILL NOT REVOLVE

I bought my parents the exact same model. Do you have the floor select switch "ON" for the brush? Did the overload protector switch trip? There is a little red button sticking out from the right hand side of the head. Check to see if it is pertruding past the cover. If so, push button in and it should reset.

SOURCE: Brush bar can't spin

Hi There,

Actually I just answered a question almost identical to yours! The belt on his model continiously snapped also.

I walked him through how to check the problem, and he was able to get his vacuum fixed. It really sounds to me like your brush roller has gone bad as well.

Also here, another link to the exact roller brush that your model take on our website if you haven't already purchased one.

I hope this helped your your vacuum!

Brush won't rotate

Hi!!

Check belt, probably broken. it is located on one of the ends of the brush, you may need to remove a couple of screws to gain access to it.

Replacements can be found at Walmart, Home Depot, or an Authorized Kenmore Service Center.

Don't forget to rate this post. Good Luck!!

Brush will not turn

The vacuum needs a new belt. Check the brush roller, if it turns easily without resitance, it needs a new belt. Get your model number off the back of the machine. It's on a sticker near the floor with UL logo on it. Go to Sears and gets some belts.

The roller brush at the bottom of the vacuum is not spinning, hence it isn't picking up the dirt. I am unable to find a way to access it so that I can see what is stopping it from turning. Can you help me?

Hello. uUsually when the roller brush stops spinning the belt is broken. TIp the machine upside down and look for several screws which hold the bottom together. Mark the location of each screw when you remove it as different lengths are common and replacement in the same hole is vital. Joe

It will only vacuum using the hose. It will not pick up while upright - the cylinder is not spinning.

Sounds like your belt has either broken or slipped off the drum brush drive. Your user maual will show how to access it and then repair the problem.

How to take the brush out?

There should be screws on the bottom plate covering the brush roll, take those out and it should come off and then you can access the brush roll.

belt could be melted to the motor that spins the brush, try free spinning the brush with your hand to see if the brush spins freely, if it does not the brush bearings could be frozen, or just need a simple new belt...hope this helps
