Question about Dell Latitude D610 Notebook

2 Answers

My family has a Latitude D610. Recently my younger sister pushed open a door between a power outlet that the charger was plugged into, and a desk where the laptop was (also plugged in to the charger). The power charger was pulled taut across the doorway, so when my sister pushed open the door (she kept pushing when it met resistance), before I could get her to stop the computer suddenly shut off. Now it will not turn on! I think I know the source of the problem: I checked the power charger and found that the plug was slightly bent (my sister kept pushing), and that the metal needle inside of the computer-side end of the power charger was half as long as before! I assume this means that the other half of the needle is stuck inside of the computer. This would be a big problem of course, as the laptop would have no way to regain power and a replacement charger would not fit in; but the computer will not turn on, which i cannot explain as I have no idea why! (My best guess is a short circuit.) Please help by offering any sort of solution on any part of the problem you can. Thanks in advance, -Jack M.

See link here to troubleshoot the no power on condition, and see link here and here for checking ac adapter for damage and replacement.
Try removing the battery, disconnecting the ac adapter, and pressing the power button down for a few moments to discharge the unit. Then reinsert the battery and perhaps it will power up...But better to replace that adapter & perhaps have a local technician take a look at it to remove the broken pin before you cause any further damage to the system....
Good luck!

I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue. If you need further assistance, please post back with a comment to this thread.

Hi,

I'm sure that you can solve this issue if you know a little bit about circuits, otherwise you need to contact laptop repairing engineer.

Unscrew all your laptop and pull out the motherboard carefully. Look at the lower side of the motherboard, very next to the charger input point, there will be a Zener Diode, which looks like this.
For safety reasons, this Zener Diode on the supply circuit burn out immediately on short circuit. Find and replace this Zener. This will cost you about half dollar, and if you contact any repairing engineer, I think this will cost you about 50~75 Dollars. You better know what to do :)

Just remember to take your time and don't get nervous working on the computer. Please report back to the thread with the results of your work.

Very Best of Luck!

Regards;

Hassan

Will keeping the ac plug connected kill my battery on Dell latitude d610?

I will suggest you to use laptop after it is full charge by removing the charger . when ever you feel battery is down then you can plug in the charger and keep using it, and when ever you see battery is full then remove the charger.
I'll not suggest you keep plugged in the charger when you are done, this way it can effect your Battery. and yes your battery can die with in a year if you are not follwing the correct way to use it.

My Dell Latitude D160 won't respond at all. I have to constantly push the power on button to even get it to come on and when it does, the battery light is on red and I think it says low critical power...

I'm confused too... it sounds like the power adapter is not (electrically) connecting to the laptop or the adapter is not delivering proper voltage/amps to the laptop.

You shoud 1. make sure that the AC plug is properly in the AC socket, 2. that the AC cord is (mechanically) connected to the adapter, and 3. that the adapter is (mechanically) connected to the laptop.

I cannot tell you how many laptops I have seen where the (internal) power connector breaks as a result of (typically) mis-handling, dropping, etc. Try (gently) wiggling the adapter connector and look for the LED changing colors.

You could also test the voltage output of the adapter with a standard Volt meter...

My Dell latitude d610 charging circuit not working on board

What needs to be done is the jack that your adaptor plugs into has solder points underneath it. All the solder points need to be resoldered to make sure that there are no cracks in the solder that are preventing the jack from charging your battery.

After this is done if the laptop still isn't charging then if you know for sure your using the correct ac adaptor with your laptop then at that point the moterboard would have to be replaced.

Battery stopped working

Hey,

Test your charger, the battery light blinking and the computer not starting up indicates not enough power to start up or not pluged into ac power, check the power adapter or charger. I suspect the battery is fine.

Thanks,

I have a Dell Latitude D630, and I have had it for less than a year, and my charger is broken. I have it plugged in and everything, and it is not working. I plug the adapter into the outlet, and the...

sorry, i have to say this-- make sure the outlet works-- or try out a different outlet. :-)

ok, then make sure the connection is tight between the 2 parts of your adapter, it may have come loose.

other than that, you have a dead adapter. laptop companies are very good about replacing them for free under warrantee. they dont want fires starting at someones home because of a 30 dollar part.

i just called my laptop company, hp, 1 week before my 1 year warrantee ran out, and they shipped me a new power adapter, free, overnight.

call dell, tell them, they'll ship you a new one with usually free shipping, and usually in a day or two tops to your door.

Charging problem

It's definitely the motherboard based on the symptoms. You can send it to their out of warranty depot. Or you can purchase the motherboard from their spare parts sales dept, then look for a local tech who can install it for you.

In the BIOS, does it show the battery and it's current state? As weird as it sounds, I've fixed an issue like this on a D600 by updating the BIOS to the most current level. Weird, but true.
