Off camera flash

I have a speedlite Canon 430EX and was wondering what the best way to operate it off camera - via a lead or wirelessly? What products are available to do this. Would appreciate any help, thanks

Here's how I did it with my Canon 430 EX II. The only other Canon flash that can act as a wireless trigger for off camera flash would be the 580 EX II and that is why I love it so much.

The only other way is Pocket Wizards or the Canon wireless thingy, which noone recommends....

Check out the NEW Pocket Wizard Mini TTi it truly does amazing things! And only 199.00!

God luck and let us know how it goes.

I have to agree with the reply you have already ..... the New Mini Pocket Wizards however are still having a problem with firing if you are using the Canon 5D Mark II, it's their glitch and they are working on it, I wish I would have waited a bit formore commentary as it is a big problem with me.

So the way I fixed my problem was I used my backup body, the Canon 40D with the 580 EX II (which is the only Canon flash that can be used as a wireless commander, and have that fire my 430 EX II which is usually on a monopod, or lightstand with umbrella, ez hotshoe etc.

You have to remember that this is not infared now it is :line of sight", so if you try it and it does not fire it is because the 580 EXII is not seeing your 430 EX II just move around slowly and play with it its an awesome way to get great photos and it's FUN!

    Hope this helps!

I have to agree with your other responder, BUT stay away from the Mini Pocket Wizard if you shoot with the Canon 5D Mark II there's a glitch and the MAC Group knows it so it's non functioning well with my camera.

In the meantime I am using my 580EX II to trigger my 430 EX II off of my 40D :O(

Good luck and keep us posted!

Try mounting the flash on your camera, turn both on and reset your camera to factory default settings in your camera menu settings.

My canon speedlite 430ex does not charge up, batteries are new and rear screen works/lights up any ideas?

Sounds like an internal wiring circuit problem. It's strange that the screen lights up but the flash doesn't charge. You should probably get it checked by Canon.

No wireless on my 430ex flash

This Canon flash gun does not have a true wireless (radio) trigger. It uses optical light pulse.

Trigger a Speedlite 430EX II with a studio flash

  1. Make sure the trigger you are using is compatible with digital flashes.
  2. isolate the smaller contact so they do not "short out" on the trigger.
  3. make sure the trigger is working and will fire other flashes
