How to turn clone mode on a kenwood tk3402u-k radio that appears to be locked

I purchased some used kenwood tk-3402u-k radios that were used to work with my existing kenwood tk-3402u-k radios. My existing radios are clonable but the radios I just purchased apear to be lock out from that feature. How can I get them into clone mode so I can copy my existing radios programming to them. Is there a way to unlock the cloning feature

You need the programming software and the PC programming cable. It is all in the software. You cannot undo the locked feature without the software.

SOURCE: how to clone a kenwood TK 3160

Ok. I have looked through the service manual for both the 2160 and 3160 and can not find anything that indicates that you can clone with just a cloning cable and not use software. However the 2170 and 3170 say to turn the power on While pressing the B button which yours doesn't have. Try turing on the radio while pressing any one of the side buttons.
Hope this helps.
P.S. The software is reasonably easy to get and IS much easier to use.. dan

The software is only availible from Kenwood. the only way to get it is to purchase the registration key from them for that software. Sorry, I program radios everyday and even the company I work for has to purchase the Registration keys.

These radios can be programmed via the keypad. However, this option must be enabled through the software, and must have a component removed from the circuit board. If you have a radio that will not go into self-programming mode when you use the proper key combination (light button+dial button while turning the radio on), your radio has not been enabled for this option.

What is the frequency for the Kenwood TK-3402U-k hand held radio

This is a UHF radio and is programmable by a Kenwood radio dealer. They do not come with any frequencies set into them. They are commercial radios and may be able to be programmed to HAM frequencies, if you are a HAM, or to your licensed commercial frequency. However, these radios may no longer be approved for commercial use in the US.

Kenwood tk 3131 , used , good shape-- how do I reprogram back to GMRS channels only?

Hi Carter,

All is good for you here, the answer is yes to cloning, but you will need the software and cables to do so, if you haven't already got this.

If you do require software and cables, ebay is the best and often cheapest way of getting this gear. look under Electronics, Radios, and follow the links to Parts & accessories.

Failing that, join yahoo group SPECIFIC to you radio Make/Model, the expert team there will give you all the info you need, plus you can download manuals, schematics and software free.

I hope this is the news you've been waiting for.

Cheers,
Peter

Read/Write password lock out

There is no way you will be able to unlock your radio.
If you are lucky and the dealer left the "Cloning" Option checked in programmation you *should* be able to clone it with your other TK-7160 with a Cloning Cable.

If this does not work, you'll need to contact Kenwood and by Serial # they will tell you who was the original dealer. Then, contact the dealer and ask for the PW or maybe they'll unlock it for you for 20$-30$.

If the dealer is not the last person who put a PW in the unit, kenwood will have to do it. (~80$-100$.)

Sorry...
