SOURCE: cannot undo the string compartment to put new

There sould be a knob that turns counterclockwise to take spool off. If not there sould be two taps that push in and pull down on what they call the spool head. Hopefully this will help you.

the nut or retainer that holds the head on or is part of the head is a left hand thread
so to undo it the action is as if you are doing up a normal nut
turn it clockwise to undo

All I know to help you would be parts replacement as plastic parts are wear items and have to be replaced. Here is a parts w/diagrams breakdown of the 1981 model year Toro 1100 trimmer. I hope this can be of help. You can order parts here to replace your "worn out" string head and spool.

My Toro 12" Trimmer (Weed eater) needs a new screw down cap to hold the spool in place. Home Depot no longer carries them. That's wheree I got the last two Weedeaters. Please give me instructions as to...

Your Toro electric trimmer parts are readily available through www.partstree.com . However, to avoid having to pay $10 in shipping for a $5 part, you should try to find your local Toro dealer. They probably have the part in stock. Go to www.toro.com and search on the dealer/distributor locator to find your closest dealer.
You will need to know the model number (5 digit) and serial number for your trimmer. These can be located on a small sticker on the trimmer.
Good luck!

I dont know what string to use in my toro 8" battery trimmer

The thinner string works well in these machines and puts a lot less strain on them. I would suggest using a string of .065 range. The thicker (and more expensive) string used in the gas machines is too heavy for these lower powered electric units.

How do you get the head off of the 12/15" electric toro

After the bolts have been removed from the head, tap all the way around the head with a rubber mallet,
(http://www1.mscdirect.com/CGI/NNSRIT?PMPXNO=4760615&PMT4NO=65151144), where it meets the bottom of the motor. It should come off with a little coaxing.

Don't know how to advance cutting wire.

Did you try bumping the head on the ground? Also, the head could be dirty, keeping the string from feeding. Or maybe the previous owner tried putting a larger size string in the head. Check to see what the proper size is for your trimmer.
Both of these suggestions could cause this.

Your bearing in the head is going bad. Don't use or it will damage more componets. You need to replace. Hope this helps.

Cannot undo the string compartment to put new string in. There may still be string in the compartment but I cannot get into it. This is a 12 inch Toro electric wacker.
