Question about Frigidaire GLTF2940ES Front Load Washer

1 Answer

Smelly washer We have a Frigidaire front load washer. We have tried bleach, vinegar, pinesol, leaving the door open, biodegradable detergents, scrubbing the door gasket, etc. None with any real success. I called Frigidaire and they told me to replace the gasket but they could not tell me how to keep the smell from returning. I think this is a design flaw with front loads that needs to be fixed by the manufacturers.

What finally worked for me was a cup of dishwasher powder, the kind that goes into an automatic dishwasher. Don't know why, but that was the only thing that ever worked!

How to clean

Hello Lisa Rucker - I suggest to first rub some bleach around the door gasket. Let this dry. Next rub some vinegar around the door gasket. Let this dry. (Do NOT mix the bleach and vinegar) Then run a hot empty load of bleach in all three dispensers. Put 1/2 cup of bleach in the detergent dispenser and fill the softener and bleach dispenser to the max fill line with bleach. Once that is done repeat the process with vinegar. Please make sure you run a load of towels or some sort of items that will not matter if you get a little bleach on them once this process is done.

Moldy gasket

It because the mildew is not just on the gasket, but it is in the tub and in the pump and discharge hose as well. You need to reduce/eliminate the mildew in those parts. There is a couple of things you should do to reduce the causes of mildew.

1. Run the machine once a month using hot water and two cups of vinegar to clean out the machine. You might need to repeat this a few times to completely clean out your machine.

2. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for the about and type of laundry detergent to use with your wash. Using too much detergent causes a build up of detergent on the tub which encourages mildew growth.

3. After your final wash of the day, leave the door and laundry detergent open, wipe dry the gasket with a cloth.

4. If the above steps does not help, try a commercial product like Affresh.

Hope this helps you.

Getting smelly, door has NEVER been shut between uses

Hello, Do you use liquid detergent, if yes, then this is the most likely the problem as there is chlorine bleaching agent in liquid powder and it has a tendency to leave the machine smelly after a while.
The cure is to do a "maintenance wash" (a biol water with no clothes or detergent in), once per month preferable twice.
Thanks

Moldy door gasket, smelly clothes

Hi,
Mold growth is a common problem due to tight seals and poor drainage.
Pull back the rubber or plastic around the tub or basin to reveal the problem. You should also check your detergent dispenser as this is another common area for mold growth. Remove any visible mold. You can use a solution of water and dish detergent or bleach (1 part bleach to 10 parts water). You could also use bleach wipes to do this depending on how stubborn the mold is.
Because of the set-up of the washer, mold can also tend to grow in pipes, traps, and outside the drum where you can't see it.
You can run an empty load on the hottest water setting with 1 cup or more of bleach. Run an empty load on the hottest water setting with 1 cup or more of vinegar. Use a product designed to attack build-up from detergents and fabric softeners. Call a repair man to service the parts of the machine you can't see or attempt to do it yourself
However Mold needs moisture to grow. Leave your washer door and detergent dispenser cover open in between loads to allow for complete drying. This will dramatically decrease or eliminate the problem.
2. clean the machine monthly to stay away from the problem.
3. Switch to powder and/or low-sudsing detergent.

Let us know if you need further clarification else please accept the solution.

You need to replace the rubber gasket around the front of the door. This gasket holds moisture and over time molds. Give us a call or email us and we;ll be sure to get the correct gasket out to you right away. We hope this helps and we hope to hear back from you real soon.

MY FRONT LOAD WASHER STINKS! THERE IS A MUSTY ODOR COMING FROM INSIDE.

Switch from liquid to powder detergent, no fabric softner (I know...I love it too), clean the gasket and run a cycle with bleach only. Leave the door open whenever possible. This fixed my smelly washer, now if it would only spin!

Front loader smells like stale cigarettes during cycle

Make sure that you are using high efficiency (he) detergent. Pour 2 cups of vinegar in the tub and fill the detergent tray with vinegar. Run it on the hottest, longest cycle. You can also use a Front load cleaner such as Afresh, made by Whirpool. I think that Tide makes one too. Vinegar is usually readily available. At the end of washing for the day, leave the door to the washer slightly open so that fresh air can get in and dry it out keeping moldy, milduey smell down. If it mildews, use a rag and bleach water to clean the boot seal. Hope this helps.

Affinity front load washer

Sounds like you have a common problem with the front load washers known as mold and mildew possibly. Between the door and drum, there is a boot that could possibly be getting water trapped in it. This water becomes fowl and will cause mildew to grow. Wash this ring and boot with a strong bleach and water mixture a few times using hot water. After you hopefully get this corrected, be sure to wipe out any leftover water out of this ring, and leave the door open after each wash. Also, be sure that you are using the proper detergent (HE Certified)when you do your washing. Follow your "Use and Care" guide that came with the washer for information on detergent recommendations and cleaning and clearing door seals after your loads. Good luck and hope this may have helped.
