Question about HP LaserJet 2100 Printer

1 Answer

First time plugged in - orange light is blinking

I have a brand new (refurbished) 2100TN, and I have plugged it into the power and into the computer, and put in paper, but although I have power, the orange light is blinking. It can't be jammed since it is just out of the box.

It didn't come with a disk, so do I need a driver? The computer didn't acknowledge "new hardware".....

    Hi Guru
thanks for the speedy response! It helped somewhat, and I installed a printer, the green light is now on, but when I tried to print out an email, even pulled up a print preview - which looked fine - what printed out was a Windows XP Printer Test Page! Repeated tries just get more printer test pages.

    Any idea what's wrong?

  • irene96 Jul 26, 2009

Oh dear. On examination, the print page is dated 6/29/2009, and the information is NOT what is happening on my computer. My computer name is not "Laptop" either, and my envornoment is not Windows NT x86 but Windows XP. This looks like a test page that got stuck in memory when the machine was refurbished. Does that make sense?

    Hi,
I think I know just about enough to get into trouble.
Maybe I'll just state some facts, and you can decide what's relevant.

1.I had previously downloaded and installed the HP Universal driver from the site you indicated.

    2. I am not on a network, and my OS says it is Windows XP Professional (I hear you about the NT 86, but I don't know how to find out)

    3. They didn't send a cable to connect to the computer, so I am using the cable that formerly connected my HP3300 (which died) to my computer. It seems to fit okay.

    4. I tried typing in dir>lpt1 from the command prompt, and it printed the same page I get every time, stamped 5:38:26 PM 6/29/2009

    5. I get the same test page no matter what I send to the printer, from any program I've tried so far.

    6. I tried: Press and release the GO and JOB CANCEL buttons simultaneously on the printer control panel as instructed, and I got the same old page.

    7. I have an OfficeJet Pro L7650 installed (so I can still print) and it is listed in the Control Panel programs, but the LaserJet 2100TN is not.

Is there anything useful in that list? And what is a "ping?"
    (sorry to be so uneducated!)

Thank you, THANK you, THANK YOU! You have been wonderfully patient! I followed your instructions for installing the download through the printer wizard, and have since printed out not only the test page but a page from Notepad. All looks fine. I REALLY appreciate your patience with me. Sorry this took so long to get finished -- I had to go out of town for a couple of days.

I gave you the best rating possible.
Have a wonderful day -- you've certainly given me one!

Here and here are installation instructions for XP.

Here is guide to configuration features.

Use these instructions to print a test page.

Some xp systems are actually NT86, but the date is wrong....

    Is it printing yet?

If you're still having problems after a test page prints ok, then see here and here. Or provide a bit more infor about your setup and ability to ping the printer, etc...

Perhaps this article will help you to make sure you have the right driver (I recommend the HP PCL6)and have installed the printer correctly...You can use the add a printer wizard to help you, available from the Control Panel>Printers & Faxes....Since you are not connecting with a USB cable, you should be able to connect the cable before installing the software....

    Hope that helps some...

These blinks [flashes] are fault indication (Error Codes). From the number of blinks occur at one time switch ON, you can get an idea about the faulty circuit section inside it. This will make repair easy. These are called blinking codes. Make sure about the exact number of blinking of the standby/power LED, by switching On & OFF the set, for at least two times. Count it carefully. If you wish to get some details, check the site linked here. It has details about blinking codes, and fault locating procedure, to many popular brand TVs and other devices. http://electronicshelponline.blogspot.com/

Hello Thomas, that is a power supply problem, the entire PS board unit is usually replaced by a new/refurbish one. Have this replaced.

My computer is blinking orange light

In addition to the power supply, motherboard issues can cause the blinking power light and no boot problems. The Optiplex 270, 520, 620, 745 and 755 units are all known to have issues with capacitors on the motherboard. Here is a link to an article about this issue and what to do about it:

I hope this helps, if sol please rate my solution.

Power light blink orange 4 times, 1 green?

My guess is that the battery is worn-out -- no longer accepting a charge, nor holding a charge. Replace the battery, or find a specialty business that "refurbishes" batteries (by opening the case, replacing the cells, and re-sealing the case).
