Question about ASUS M2N-E SLI (M2N-E SLI GREEN) Motherboard

1 Answer

Serious problems with an Asus M2N E SLI motherboard.

I tried to build the following system:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 6400+ Black Edition
Asus M2N E SLI
XFX 8500GT 256MB
2 X 1 Gig Kingston PC2 5300
Thermaltake Toughpower 850W
When it is all put together just nothing happens its as if the power button where broken but it isnt because it still switches my old hardware on, a small LED light on the motherboard lights up when i switch the power supply on. I have tried the CPU on another motherboard and the same thing happened (MSI K9MMV). I then tried another CPU a cheap AMD sempron and this didnt work either. I have trioed multiple PSUs and still no change i'm becoming desperate any ideas what it could be? thanx in advance.

System had been powering up with no problems. I turned it off last night and when I wne to turn it on this morning I had the same problem - green standby light is on, fans flutter for a split second, then nothing.

    I have now! After your recommendations the problem remains.

    Being my first use of this service, I inadvertently rated the advice as sufficient to solve my problem. In fact, it didn't, but did provide more insight for the experts. I'm happy to give my adviser a high rating, but will appreciate further support.
    I am still seeing the standby light (green), but the system will not start. The fans flutter for an instant and then nothing happens. I have tried everything suggested in the postings related to this problem (ie. removed RAM, Video, CPU, etc.) The only thing I haven't done is try a different power supply, because I don't have one to try.

    Problem resolved!
    Out of desperation, I pulled everything - even expansion slot covers. Something worked. I suspect a lose cover that shorted the MBO.

Have you tried removing all other hardware like your graphics card and all other peripheral cards even memory and booting to see and eliminate all other components?

939 pin Athlon 64 X2 / Athlon 64 FX / Athlon 64 are the supported CPU's.
For the SLI connector, it's a 2 1/2 inch connector. (63.5mm).

Motherboard Issue

Hi Tomokato,
This maybe nothing but the first thing I checked is the CPU.
Supported CPU list through Asus web site for M2N-SLI
(Click on this link).
The first supported 64 X2 is;
Athlon 64 X2 3600+ (CU),512K,65W,rev.F2,SocketAM2
Second CPU supported;
Athlon 64 X2 3600+ (DD),1MB,65W,rev.G,SocketAM2

The CPU that you are using is not supported.
Since this is a new CPU, you might be able to exchange it for the Athlon 64 X2 3600+ (CU),512K,65W,rev.F2,SocketAM2.
Link to Asus main web site for M2N-SLI.
Suggest you add the above link to you're favorites.

Even you're memory is not supported. As seen in user manual page. 2-13.

Have more questions, feel free to ask.

Serious problems with an Asus M2N E SLI motherboard.

I understand how this must be driving you nuts. What I am going to suggest might sound stupid but I have to ask. After your assembly was finished (1st time around) did you check the 4-pin ATX + 12volt connector was correctly & fully inserted into the board? Pg. 2-28 section 6. in your manual? Did you add thermal grease to the CPU. A bad pin on the CPU will give you this symptom. I completly understand if you do not agree with this next part but it is extreamly important you go with it. Take the static bag your board was wrapped in & lay it on a table. Place a piece of foam on the static wrap & place your motherboard on the foam. You can use books instead. Connect your PSU, CPU heatsink & fan, Hd & video card & 1dimm to motherboard. Connect mouse, keyboard & monitor.
Check that PSU is set for 115v (small red slide switch near the off/on toggle switch). Plug in the PSU to outlet.
If the green led on board lights up you have power to board. This is known as a standby led. If it's not on, flip the toggle switch on the PSU to on.
Use a pen to short the power switch. This will turn on the board, no different than you pressing the power button on your case. Goto pg. 2-30 in your manual. Find PWRSW two pins. If the system starts up than somewhere durring install the board was shorted to the case.
