Try this open the hot water valve, when the display reads ventilate, push in the knob on the valve, if water is then released then the tap rod assembly needs to be replaced.

My machine reads "prime water system

The reply cannot be helpful if any explanation is offered without knowing the category, make and model of the coffee maker.
Basically the water flow in the system is slowed. The machine may need descaling.
If the pump is louder than normal, it is air locked and will need manual priming to let it pump normal.
The manual priming is to inject a few drop of water into the pump (just like a speaker needs a sip of water to continue his speech).
To manually prime the pump you can use a syringe, a Turkey bastor (if you are in USA) or use a hand pump made available with some makes (included as accessory with Saeco, Gaggia espresso machines).
For descaling you may use the link to order a reliable descaler:

Starbucks Saeco Italia Digital Barista Fully Automatic Coffee Machine will not prime!

Here is what is said in the manual:

"Direct the steam arm on the drip tray.
Open the steam/hot water knob until a
steady stream of water is dispensed. Close
the knob. Insert the filter holder into the
brew head to pre-heat the filter holder.
The machine is now ready to dispense
coffee."

We got a gagia expresso color machine recently. We used it for a week and now the machine is not is not dispensing expresso. The machine makes sound but no expresso comes out. The tank has enough water....

Your are propably need to prime the machine. This mean that air blocked in the machine and need to get out and fill all pipe system with water.
To do this you need to warm up the machine and turn the hot water knob so you will get one cup of hot water from the steam wand. After that try to get some water from the coffee head without any coffee in the filter handle. Now the machine is ready for coffee again. You will need to prime the machine very often so try to remember the procedure. This will happen again usually after you use the steam process and this normal for your machine.

Initially when the unit said need to prime, no water would flow out of the steam unit. After pulling the pump out and cleaning it, not sure what was blocking water the steam unit now has water pressure,...

I fixed the same issue by pushing in the water knob "in" towards the machine. Machine than primes normally as the water flow is restored and it resets itself.

My machine seems to be set on ventiate. it wil dispense hot water but that's it.

Having read the other reviews here, I was prepared for the cryptic "VENTILATE" message. (The manual refers to this procedure as "Loading the circuit", which doesn't help to clarify things.) Of course this refers to what Americans would call "priming" the machine. As mentioned in another review, there is a plastic hand pump supplied for priming, but that is only needed in the event that the electric pump fails to self-prime. All I had to do (following the quick-start instructions) was to select the Hot Water function; the internal pump quickly primed itself. I hope this helps , Lee Davidian

Priming problem

Make sure you try to prime right when the machine is turned on, so that there is no boiler pressure making it more difficult to prime.
