SOURCE: I have many issues with my android eris
I had the same problem with my Motorola Droid. The problem is that you have added your own contacts, or worse, copied them over from another phone. You then have undoubtedly synced up Google or Facebook contacts. If the spelling of both names isn't relatively exact, it won't combine them. You can manually force the phone to do this. Go into your contacts, long press and goto edit on a contact. From there, press the menu key on your device. In that menu you will see a Join option. Press this, and then select the duplicate entry to combine. Its a bit of a PITA, but that's what I had to do.
As far as the second issue, the only thing I can think of is that the sync options are set incorrectly in the phone. From your home screen, press the menu key, go to Settings, then Accounts & Sync. From there, make sure "auto-sync" is enabled. Then, make sure your Google account is listed. If so, select the Google account, and make sure that the "sync contacts" option is checked. If all these options were already enabled, then I apologize, and this problem is obviously over my head.
Also, please keep in mind that my experience is with the Motorola Droid, running Android 2.0. The menu system on your Eris will probably vary slightly, so some improvisation may be in order.

phone > contacts > menu button > account > add account > (add your gmail account if its not listed) > checkmark sync options it might take a bit, but it should sync all your contacts back up with your gmail account. You can sync with facebook, twitter, myspace, corporate networks, and yahoo as well in the same way.

If you have backed up your contacts somewhere like Gmail, you can directly recover your contacts from the backup. However, if you don't have done this before, you may probably need a third-party software to recover contacts from Android. My friends recommend Jihosoft Android Phone Recovery
