Question about Sewing Machines

1 Answer

My Dutailier XL recliner/glider no longer has any tension in the recliner function. It just slides up and down freely no matter how tight or loose the knob to adjust it is screwed. Can I fix it?

You need to loosen the tension on the machine. There is a dial that has numbers on it. The higher the dial is set, the tighter the tension is. Turn the dial to the left one number. Then try it. Do it over and over. Do not turn the dial all the way down or you will mess up your machine. Do it slowly, one number at a time and try the machine between dials.

The top stities is good/the bottom stities is very loose

Can be a tension problem, can be a threading problem too. First, unthread machine completely, and rethread carefully, be sure it's all just right. Check the thread guides to be sure there aren't any that are catching the thread. Also try using a new spool of thread, and a new needle as well.

If, after doing all that, you cannot find an upper tension setting that gives you a balanced stitch, on occasion, the bobbin might also need an adjustment for tension. Generally you should be able to get a balanced stitch at any setting, so if no setting is working, check bobbin tension too.

Remove the bobbin case. Pull a length of thread out from it and dangle the bobbin case by the thread and bounce it a little, as if you were playing with a YoYo. If the bobbin won't move at all, tension may be too tight. If it slides along the thread freely, it is too loose.

Get something to mark the position of the tiny screw that's on the bobbin case first and mark where it is now, so you can put it back where it was if need be. It is usually just a tiny slot screw, and you only move it a tiny, tiny fraction of a turn at one time. Clockwise usually tightens.. but check to be sure which direction does what. Then move the screw very slightly and dangle the bobbin case again to see if it's better.

Should move along the thread when you jerk the thread, but not slide freely, and not stick tightly in one place.

If adjusting the bobbin does not help, then chances are that the upper tension adjustment mechanism is worn out, and it may need to be replaced.

The top tension is very tight

check that there are no pieces of cotton or other matters stuck. Turn the tension to its most loose position and by hand move a string of cotton through the tension slot. If it feels tight, remove any foreign matters and then slowly tighten it again to suit your needs..

You should not have to adjust the bottom tension when using sewing thread.

There is a tiny screw on the side of the bobbin case - left/loose; right/tight.

Mark the screw head slot and edge of the bobbin case with nail polish or sharpie so you know where you started.

If you are having a stitching problem that appears to be loose bobbin thread, it may be that the machine was threaded with the presser foot down.

Always thread a sewing machine with the presser foot up.

When the presser foot is down when threading, the thread cannot enter the tension control and you get loose, loopy stitching.

My brother sewing machine is new and I've checked that it is threaded up correctly but the top tension is way too tight, no matter how I change it. Is there no way to change the bottom tension? It is an...

Yes. Open the bobbin and u will see a screw pressing down a metal sheet, which is actually a spring.
This is meant for adjusting the top tension. Loosen this screw by quarter or half a turn and see if it is giving the desired result. You may have to try a few settings before you arrive at the even top and bottom tensions when your thread tension adjustment scale is midway position.

Please note that you adjust the thread tension on the machine to adjust the bottom tension(not the top) .
Please let me know if this solved the problem.

I have a Brothers XL-3200 which works great but then the bottom thread will bunch up, amass, thread will wind around the bobbin and lock up the machine. It can also break the needle. Can you help me??

Your thread tension needs adjustment.

Most likely it is the lower thread tension (not the upper thread tensioner).

When sewing very thin or very heavy material - it is required to adjust the lower tension as well.

To regulate the lower thread tension - turn the small screw on the tension spring of the bobbin case with a small screwdriver.

To increase tension - turn it clockwise SLIGHTLY.

Sewing machine XL 5500 settings

Your bobbin is probably too loose. When you set a new bobbin, stop every now and then and try with your fingers nail if it's nice and tight enough. Not extremely tight, but tight, not loose and moves easily when you set your finger between the threads.

With most fabrics (99%) the plate is fine at the the top position, just with very thick and "fragile" (satins etc) you might need to adjust it.

Settings: Tightest tension for the thinnest materials, more loose for the thicker ones, better have a test piece, it rarely goes under 5 anyway.

Thread tension for regular seam sewing

oil the shaft for the presser bar and keep moving it up and down(it may take a while) until it moves freely. Always use Sewing machine oil Not 3N1 oil.
Tension:
If the thread is loose on the bottom of the fabric, it's actually the top thread is too loose. Think of 2 little elves playing tug of war in your machine, one on top and one underneath. If you have loops on bottom, the top needs to pull harder (tighten top tension). If you have loose thread on top your top tension is probably too tight and your bobbin thread too loose

Lower thread tension is too loose but no adjustment seems to work

From your description it appears that you have tried tension settings on the upper tension control adjustment knob without success.
Check that the bobin tension is adjusted correctly by taking out the bobin complete with the spool.
Pull the cotton thread and it should be a smooth light pressure if the tension is correct. If it is tight to pull or pulls freely then adjust the tension screw which is found on the outside of the bobbin. The screw is very small and requires a minature size screwdriver. The adjustment will only be a slight turn of the screw one way or the other to obtain the correct tension(depending if it was loose or tight).
Once this is set reinstall the bobin and tread up the machine, hopefully with the upper tension set at approx."2" the machine will sew correctly.
