Question about Garmin Forerunner 201 GPS Receiver

1 Answer

Connecting to computer -- does not seem to see my device

Hi, I installed the Garming Training Center and for about 2 years I was able to download my runs into it.
After a Microsoft update (I believe though not 100% sure), I lost connectivity to the Forerunner 201. I've resetted the system several times, cleaned the contacts on both the unit and the adapter.
Other than re-installing windows to see if that is the issue, I am not sure what to do. Is there a driver that needs to be updated?

Try reinstalling any/all apps that came with the Forerunner and check for updates from the site before you plug it in again. If that doesn't work, reply/repost and I'll see if I can help.

How do you transfer 305 history to a new computer?

If you go into the Garmin Training center software under "File" you should see "Export". On some versions there is a Back up as well.

If you go into the Export and Export everything, Work outs, History, and Courses (all seperatly) you should be able to save these files to a USB stick. Using the USB stick you should then be able to "Import" these files to the new PC. Obviously you will need to install the Training Center onto your new PC first.

As my unit is more than 1 year old a message comes up that tells me the maps require updating how do i do that

the wire that plugs into the garmin nuvi models is also a fairly genaric usb wire so you might have one lying around, but you need to plug the unit into a computer and go onto the garming website.

Missing training data from my Garmin 305....

Unless you created a "back up file" with the Training Center software unfortunatly you will not be able to retrieve the data.

Regular back ups will insure you do not lose information in the future.

To back up your data in the Training Center go to "File" and "Back up" I believe the early version of the Training Center did not have the Back up feature so you would then need to use the "File" Export" option.

I have just loaded Win 7. I have re install Garmin Training Center. It says, since this is the first time you are using the program, your device needs to be added to training center. It repeats itself...

I had the same problem, my husband finally uninstalled the software which I had installed using the original disk, then he reinstalled it using software downloaded from Garmin. Works great now. Hope this helps you.

Lost CD Rom for my Axim x30. Anywhere I can download it?

You need ActiveSync from Microsoft. Unless you're using Vista which uses Windows Mobile Device Center. Connecting to the Axim to a Vista machine should automatically download the Windows Mobile Device Center software.

ActiveSync for XP and older systems can be downloaded here:

You'll proabbly still want to update your Axim's firmware and drivers if possible.

Good luck!

Training Center won't save data

Are you using the original CD?

I had something similar happen when I upgraded my Wife's software. I ended up lossing all her history. I had to do a Windows restore to regain the information.
I then backed up her data and tried again. Same thing and the back up files would not work either.
If I used the original CD that came with the unit all was fine. But as soon as I tried the new version of the training center all was lost.
I didn't try to transfer data while all this was happening. I was too scared to try as I didn't want to lose what she had on the unit it'sself. So I'm not entirely sure if this will help you or not but definitely use the original CD that came with your unit.

Information to computer

I did have exactly the same problem.
I think what caused the unit to stop communicating with the computer was that somehow I switched to "multisport" mode.
I was cycling and somehow I switch to running.

The solution that worked for me was to download and install the "Webupdater" software from the Garmin site. This will update the firmware on your forerunner 305 (you need to be connected to the internet of course). After 5 to 7 minutes it will be done.

Then, download the latest Garmin "Training Center". This worked for me, I'm relieved now.

Computer has a problem communicating with my forerunner 205

I just got off the phone with garmin tech. She helped me solve the problem. Here are the steps.

1. Go to

2. Download "Forerunner 205 Ver. 2.80 as of Nov 12, 2007", unzip it, and browse to the folder you unzip the files to.

3. Make sure your Forerunner is connected to your computer and turn it on. Drag file "048401000280.rgn" and drop it on "Updater.exe". A screen will pop up, select "USB" then click OK. Then wait till the process completes.

4. Go to the website on Step 1 and download "Training Center For Windows Ver. 3.3.4 as of Feb 29, 2008". Install it.

5. Run Training Center. At this point, I am able to send/receive data to my Forerunner.

Hope this helps!
