Time for a replacement. Best advice. They are pretty cheap now days. You will spend more money trying to repair this one than buying a new one.

after 4 or 5 yrs (depending on usuage ) in some TVs on mainboard & CRT tube's circuit board at some soldering joints cracks develops ... then due to loose contact TV behaves as you have described ........ when you are hitting that lightly on its side then these cracks at soldering joints are getting connected temporarly & for few seconds or minutes you are getting normal picture ....... so solution is most of the soldering joints on mainboard & on CRT circuit board has to be resoldered ....... only good tv service engineer can do this without shorting joints or damaging components..... so in your place contact few TV service engineers & ask them how much they will charge for resoldering joints on mainboard & crt tube's circuit board ......

Sony XBR 40" tube tv.

Failure of the vertical deflection module/circuit. The tv will have to be opened, the vertical deflection circuit found and replaced.
Definitely a job for a pro - the circuit is going to be extremely difficult to extract. The repair will cost you about $200: $20 for a new circuit and $90 per hour for the 2 hour job.

I have a ten year old 37" Sony XBR TV that works fine until you turn it off and then go to turn it back on. The picture does not come back, but sound does. The only way to solve this is leave it off...

most likely it needs repiars, (replacement of capacitors in the power-supply.)primary and secondary side.
Or loose conections (dry joints)

I think you need to check the high voltage in the damping diode if it is entering the picture tube. If this diode is faulty the tube will not light. you can also check the circuit before it enters the damping diode if there is voltage present.

Repeated burn up horizontal transistor

Sorry if that sounded kind of kurt. All that i ment is that the price of repeadly fixing an older tube tv may start to outweigh the price of a new flat panel tv. Also samsung (if you like that brand) is still making high definition slim fit tube tv's. Which is an older technology driven tv with new bells and wistles. Also sony's XBR line is an absolutely fantastic tv. When tube tv's were being mas produced sony came up with the XBR line and have been using it ever since. If you can find an XBR series tube tv for a reasonable price you can bet on the fact that it will be a phoneminal tv without spending the mass amounts of money on a flat panel. But as for the repeated burn up of your transistor i cant be of much help. And if thats all you care about doing is fixing the tv you already have well then i just wasted a few min. of your life. I wish i could be of more help on this.

wow. mostly all new set from the last few years have a dual tuners
NTSC and ATSC and that would depend if or which set will get the better signal. Also remember that off air is analog and the sets are now design for digital.

Sony Trinitron experiences

The screen control inside the set may be on the highvoltage transformer or on the crt socket; either way if you can turn it up just a little clockwise and the picture comes up but doesn't look good you are likely to have a bad tube. Or try tapping lightly on the glass neck and watch the picture as you tap. If it reacts to the tap you have a bad tube. but the turning the screen control is the best test. Turn it the other way the picture goes off immediately. bad tube: too costly if it is available.

Sony 27" XBR failure

I will suggest dont ise it until someone who is qualified comes over to give you an estimate,I belive you have a lot of loose conections in the horizontal driver and output circuits, power supply and crt board.Should not be expensive to repair right now. Good luck.
