SOURCE: pto switch engages, pto light activates, no power

I would check to see if the clutch is acutally OK. Start by unhooking the connector at the deck and supply a 12volt source (has tro bee high amp) to the leads...Be aware! The red(or white or green) is the positive and the black is the negative....don't hook them up wrong. If you've done this and the clutch still won't turn on the blades. then you have to replace the clutch.

SOURCE: Blades won't engage. OK-I need a pto clutch

A switch should only be about $25. Before you spring for a new PTO assembly, take your switch out and take it to a shop and have it tested. I may just be a bad switch. Don't bother taking it to Sears though. Take it to a shop that works on Husqvarna and/or Poulan Pro. (Both basically same as Craftsman). DO take the model number from under the seat with you.

SOURCE: i think i may need to replace the pto clutch on my

Depending on the age of the mower, it sounds like a wire has wiggled lose, or the switch itself has gone bad. I would check the wiring to the switch and to the pto clutch and ensure that all wires are secure, free of corrosion. If this still doesn't fix the issue, install new switch. This appears to be entirely and electrical issue, and is a cheaper troubleshooting method before tearing down the pto engagement system.

Let me know!

SOURCE: PTO problem on a model

Hi,
I would be looking at the ignition switch....but before replacing it I would be looking for a friend with an electrical meter and checking the wiring for power coming out of the switch to the cluthch, this way you can narrow it down positively before buying parts.

Most of these mowers have a safety switch between the PTO switch and clutch. A safety switch or relay is most likely the problem. Hope this will help ya.

Why does my Craftsman Garden Tractor # 917276022 that runs but when I engage the pto it dies immediately?

well usually when this happens it;s a safety switch that's defective or misadjusted but your sure these are good Id try dropping the mower deck and try enguaging pto if it still runs you got a deck problem ,I have seen spindle bearings lock so tight that it'll stall a 46 hp tractor but that was a brush cutter deck

Hi, check the seat switch for continuity with a multimeter, its most likely not working. If ok check that you have battery voltage at the pto plug, if so the pto is no good. Hope this helps, regards Phil.

I have a Craftsman GT 5000 Garden Tractor, 25 HP, 48" mower. I recently changed the mower belt and it was working fine for about 2 weeks. The last time I mowed, the mower blades suddenly stopped and I...

Depending on your engine.. Briggs and Stratton or Kohler there are 2 different seat switches that are used to power the PTO clutch. The seat switch can cause the PTO clutch to disengage anytime there is not at least 70 lbs in the seat.

The PTO drive wiring has a 30 amp fuse in it. If by chance a stick went through the belt and tore off the wires at the PTO clutch (Common failure) even after you repair the broken wire you still need to replace the fuse.

Check the PTO clearance gap. It should be 0.012 dis-engaged. Any other value and the clutch will not work correctly. Adjust the clutch if necessary.

There is a 2 pin Pigtail just off of the PTO Clutch that you need to check for voltage at the connector. Probe the back of the wires if you can and your looking for 12V DC under the following conditions.

BRAKE ON or tied down
KEY ON
SEAT (Briggs and Stratton engine only) Someone needs to be sitting on the seat.

Then Pull the PTO Switch out. You should hear the PTO Clutch CLICK. If you hear the click there is no need to check voltage. The PTO switch is a multi function switch and it is quite possible the PTO switch failed. I doubt that the PTO Clutch has failed as they normally give you some kind of noisy indication that they are failing and don't fail straight away.

So.. In short
Check PTO Switch (Red wires) to usually red or brown thru the switch
Check 30 amp fuse
Check PTO clutch wires near PTO clutch (They get torn from something traveling through the pulley)
Check PTO clutch clearance at 0.012
Check Brake switch for an audible click as you depress it some distance No click.. possible bad switch
Listen for Seat switch Click as you slowly add weight to the seat. No Click or any click and it can still be suspect due to the Briggs and Stratton installed engine ones have more than one function.. Ignition and PTO clutch power.

The actual wiring diagram is on page 35 of the owners manal that can be found here:
http://www.managemylife.com/mmh/owner_manuals/27245/CRAFTSMAN-Lawn,-Tractor-L9910386?brand_name_search=917273023

Lastly... check each of the mower deck blade bearings. A seized bearing can cause PTO problems.

Hopefully you have enough information to solve the mystery. If not just respond here and I will help you.

Thanks for choosing FixYa.

The mower turns on fine but when i engage the pto to start mowing it doesn't work and shuts off and blows the fuse

could have bad pyo switch or pto clutch.make sure every thing turns freely, blades and pullys then unplug clutch and try to enguage if does not blow fuse check clutch with meter. put meter on ohms probe one terminal and other on ground via clutch housing should not have continuety check other terminal to ground.voltage goes in one term and out the other like litebulb if potting (insulator) in clutch is melted wire inside will short on housing.hope this helps

John deere 997 z trak pto not working, changed pto switch not help

You may have a defective park brake switch or the pto clutch could need to be adjusted.Does the machine **** down when you try to engage the pto?If so also check the seat switch. To adjust the pto clutch you need a 9/16' wrench and tur all three lock nuts on the clutch a half turn at a time a retry the clutch, keep going until it will stay engaged.

Craftsman 26hp Garden Tractor PTO not working

If you changed the belt make sure it did not interfere with the wire that runs from the pto clutch, sometimes that belt can rub on the wire and wear through it,also if you had the clutch off make sure you aligned the steel retainer bolt that sets in the alignment hole on the pto clutch, this keeps the clutch from spring when disengaged if you don't get that pin through the hole in clutch it can push on the clutch and bind it.Also it may be possible to plug that pto switch in backwards. Also if you jumped the fuse out it may now have burnt the switch or wiring somewhere.
