Knowing which kind of machine you have helps alot. Just guessing but maybe the reverse mechanism is stuck and needs some oil in it to free it up. Or the buttonhole mechanism is stuck in reverse part of it.
Probably you should have it looked at.

Try re-threading and re-installing the bobbin.
Make sure the thread from the bobbin is feeding in the correct direction and through the guide on the bobbin case.
Make sure the presser foot is up when threading.

Sounds to me like you want to have straight stitch and you have stitch selector set for a decorative stitch. Recheck machine settings. Use correct presser foot too for job you are doing. Jimmy

SOURCE: My machine runs fine in forward but when I reverse it doesn't lock any stitches. It simply goes backwards leaving the thread lose (without interlocking from the bobbin). Then when you go forward
have you tried changing the needle?
