Sounds like dirt in the fuel jet. If it has a fuel bowl take it off and clean it out and clean the fuel jet as well. 80 percent of the time that will make it run. Be careful you don't let the float get out of place and make sure the gaskets go back in place or you could have a gas leak.

There is a fuel strainer on the pickup pipe in the fuel tank, that is it, no external filter.

will it stay running with your choke on? if so then clean your carb. if not then look for a blockage from tank to carb. ie fuel shut off, deteriorated fuel line. plugged filter etc

if its a briggs and stratton engine with the plastic carb fixed to top of the fuel tank then you will need to replace the diaphragm and blow out the fuel pick up pipe

My lawn mower will not stay started

You need to check the fuel line for cracks/breaks. Check the fuel filter if it has one. If these two things are o.k., then you will need to clean the carb. It probably has debris in it.

Won't stay running

Try cleaning out the fuel tank and replacing the fuel filter. What happens is it has enuf gas to run but not enuf to run when it demans more power. You might find earwigs int he tank clogging the fuel hole at the bottom (common problem)

Mower will not stay running

Sounds like a lack of fuel. If it has a briggs motor replace fuel pump diaphram in carb.
