Not cooling issues in cooling devices has, generally, four causes
lost refrigerant
compresor damaged
thermostat issues
Fan issues
First I would check if the fan is working. If that is the cause, they are cheap and is a DIY job
For other issues, would suggest to have it diagnosed by a repair facility

Mine is 10 years old. How can I refurbish the refrigeration system?

Certainly. Providing the system holds pressure, it can go indefinitely. Newer motor technology, in the compressor area would use significantly less energy, consider switching that out.

Ice on the back wall; temperature went from 58 degrees to 34 degrees; had to shut off regrigerator

Wine cabinets work off of cycle defrost, so in order to built frost your temperature sensors are not working properly. I would look for corrosion on or in connections to be the fault or problem. Sensors report information to control unit and thats there only job. Its the control unit that dictates function. Look for corrosion to be the problem, clean connection and seal with RTV when connection a corrected.
Good Luck

My Transtherm Castle wine cabinet has accumulated ice in the lower chilling compartment, I need to know what is involved in thawing/defrosting the cabinet.

Check the thermostat setting; it may be set too high. If lowering the setting does not solve the problem, replace the thermostat.
P.S. The thermostat is what controls the temperature.

Icing up on back wall

I have the same model and the same thing just started with mine! Did you find the solution?

It's now 2017, and I should've post the resolution a long time ago. I've had ice form on the back of my unit several times over the last years and the problem has always been because one or more bottles were touching the interior back wall. Any kind of contact with the walls will cause the ice to build-up. Check your bottles and pull them forward a bit to ensure they are not touching the back wall.

thats because 42 degrees is the optimum temperature for wine to be at. unlike other beverages wine coolers only go to 42 degrees.
