Question about PfaFF Sewing Machines

1 Answer

Thread shred. Pfaff 463. Using 120/19 new needle. And Sunguard Anti-wick UVR bonded polyester thread for marine canvas. Why is my thread shredding?

The thread is shredding at the needle, and this thread is treated with anti shred. I sew for about an inch or two and then it starts. It almost feels too hard to pull the thread through the upper tension mechanism. I have s really good pic of it. Is there any way I can send it? Thank you Pam

From my past sewing experience (not an industrial machine), the thread will shred if the needle/thread/fabric are incompatible. Could be the canvas is too coarse and is wearing on the thread like sandpaper. Remember, the thread/needle will penetrate over 10 times before that section of thread actually forms a stitch, so that's a lot of friction going on. In regular sewing, a top-stitch needle has a larger scarf which acts to protect the thread, however, not sure that is a choice for your machine.

Thread keeps breaking. What should be adjusted?

Depends when/where the thread breaks and which thread breaks. Is it shredding or snapping? Does it break immediately or after sewing an inch or more? Is the needle the correct type for the fabric and the needle eye appropriate size for the thread weight?

All About Needles

Install a brand new needle.
Completely remove the top thread from the machine.
AVOID old or bargain bin threads--try a different thread.
ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot and rethread from the beginning.
Verify the thread path is correct.
Set the upper tension to the midway point and test the machine.

Be sure the bobbin is installed and turning the correct direction in the bobbin case.
Verify the bobbin case is threaded correctly.

Futura quartet keeps shredding the top thread, help?

AVOID old or bargain bin thread--use only fresh, good quality thread. Try a brand new needle, perhaps switch to a top-stitch needle. Change to a different brand of thread. Check to make sure the top thread follows the correct threadpath and that no guides have been skipped or threaded out of order. Check that the top tension is not set too tight.

Juki ddl8700 shreds the thread

Thread shredding:

Install brand new needle(s). Make sure the needle eye is the appropriate size for the thread you are using. Check that the needle is the correct type for the fabric & thread, ie coarse (abrasive) fabric would benefit from the protection of a top stitch needle which has a larger scarf.

Sometimes the thread is being held back in the thread path causing the needle to wear and shred the thread. Check that the upper tension is correct. ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot when threading the top thread. Make sure the upper thread follows the correct path and that it is not threaded incorrectly or looped around the spool pin or a thread guide.

How do I fix thread breaking and shredding on a Janome mb 4

If upper thread is actually shredding, change the needle. Verify the needle is compatible with the thread and fabric you are sewing. Thread that is too large for the needle eye will shred.

My new Quilt Expressions 4.2 sews fine when I piece but when I fmq I have problems with thread shredding How to fix?

Shredding thread could be several things. First, make sure the thread and needle are compatible. If the needle's eye is too small for the thread, it will eventually shred the thread. There are also needles with larger scarfs that will protect the thread from shredding as it repeatedly pierces fabric. Also, trying a different brand/type of thread may make a difference--focus on good quality thread for fmq. The tension may be set too tight. Finally, there could be a burr or snag somewhere that is causing the thread to shred.

Why is the thread shredding at the needle?

Shredding will happen, in this case, mostly because the canvas is abrasive and wears the thread each time the needle pierces the fabric. A thread can pierce the fabric 10-20 times before it becomes part of a stitch. Try a top-stitch needle. It has a larger groove to shield the thread when it pierces the fabric. Also check that the thread is not too large for the needle eye. A small needle eye can also shred thread.

Top thread is shredding Automatic needle threader stopped working

If the top thread is shredding it is usually because the needle and thread are not compatible. If thread is too large for the eye and the thread groove, the action of sewing will cause the thread to shred as it pieces the fabric.

Try a different needle and thread. Here's an excellent web site:
