It's probably not the ice-maker. It has a plugged drain. This is located in the back wall of the freezer near the bottom. remove the evaporator cover...(the back wall of the freezer). Below the coils is a trough with a hole in it where the defrost water drains. This is probably frozen over.
Pour some hot water in to trough until you see drain hole. Keep pouring until water runs thru drain. May have to shut down ref to get it to defrost.
Check Temp inside freezer. It has to be down to about 10 or 15 degrees See if water is in icemaker. Pour water in Ice Maker and wait to see if it ejects. If it ejects theb you need to replace water valve in rear bottom of fridge(Its the part that attaches to water line out of wall) If it doesn't eject then it is a faulty Ice Maker. That is a rare happening but the solution is inside the ice maker itself. If your ice maker is not making ice and you poured water into the ice maker, that would indicate the ice maker is not cycling. If you have any make or model except a whirlpool, kitchenaid or sears kenmore, if you replace the ice maker, you will be making ice in no time. If you have one of the aforementioned brands, AND the ice BUCKET is mounted on the door, you will have to replace the electric eye boards on either side wall as well, as these often short, damaging the icemaker electronics in the process.
does the water dispenser work OK ? if yes , a try this : pour 3/4 of a cup of water into the ice maker, right into where the ejection fingers are. also , take all of the ice out of the ice bin. then , give the freezer time to freeze the water you have poured into the ice maker and see if the ice maker ejects the ice into the bin. if it does, it might reset itself and refill the unit and work normally.
Most ice makers do have a defrost element below the ice maker. The problem you described is strange. I would like the model of the refrigerator and brand name. Unplug refrigerator and remove ice maker from freezer compartment now. If water continues to flow you may need the service line that feeds refrigerator turned off until I get your model number.
