For the magneto, the rule I always used was put a standard thickness business card between it and the flywheel and tighten it down, then remove the card. This leaves just enough clearance.

Hi i would like to know why do i only have fire on one side of my 23 hp kawasaki motor?

Assuming that you have checked the spark plug and confirmed that it has not completely failed, the most common reason is the magneto on that side has failed. (There is a separate magneto for each cylinder).

To replace a magneto, you'll need to look up which part is used on your particular engine. (You will need the brand (Briggs, etc.) and the complete engine model and type numbers from the id tag on the engine).

Then go to an intrernet parts seller and look up your part number. One place you can start at is at PartsTree
http://www.partstree.com/parts/
Once there, click on the engine icon for your engine and drill down until you find the correct magneto part number.

Replacing the magneto is simple, removing the top engine sheet metal cover involves removing a few bolts, and both magnetos are then readily available.

When installing the new magneto, you first screw it down at the furthest point away from the flywheel. Then rotate the flywheel so that the magnet is aligned with the new magneto.

As part of the new magneto, you will get a thin sheet of cardboard that you hold against the flywheel magnet and loosen the new magneto, allowing it to be pulled again the magnet (with the special cardboard spacer in between).

Use care as the magnet is quite strong and the magneto will be pulled to it with a strong force.

Now firmly tighten the two screws that mount the new magneto and slowly rotate the flywheel to remove the cardboard. Replace the engine top cover and your done.

I am getting no spark at plug. Briggs model 31c707 motor. I have charged battery, adjusted valves, verified fuel line clear. Pull spark plug put into wire hold to motor and crank (no spark)

Hello, the next couple of things to check would be under the engine lid.

  1. Remove the screen over the air fan on the top of the fly wheel.
  2. Remove the 4 bolts securing the main lid and remove. Depending on the year of this engine it may have a secondary cover that Craftsman put on that will need to be removed first.
  3. When the lid is off you will see the magneto coil right above the spark plug; just follow the spark plug wire up to it.
  4. Use a wrench to see if the magnet on the fly wheel is strong. If the magnet is bad or really weak the flywheel will need to be replaced.
  5. Next check the magneto ground out wire. It will be a small black wire on the magneto. Unplug it then crank the engine. If the engine starts plug the wire back on the magneto and if it shuts down there is a short along the wire. It should only shut down or short out when the key is shut off. You will need to find the short if this is the problem.
  6. If the magnet is strong and the above test still fails to provide a spark then it is likely that the magneto is bad. You will need the rest of the model number; it will look something like: 31c707- # # # # - # # The part runs somewhere around $35.00 from Sears, but you might find it on-line cheaper.
  7. Replacing the magneto is pretty straight forward from there.
  8. Remove the old one and replace the old one adjusting it as far away from the flywheel as possible.
  9. Turn the flywheel until the magnet is directly across from the magneto.
  10. Put an ordinary business card between the magneto & the flywheel.
  11. Loosen the 2 screws that hold the magneto in place just enough for it to tighten up to hold the business card in place.
  12. Tighten the screws holding the magneto & rotate the flywheel to remove the business card.
  13. Test rotate the flywheel by hand a couple of full turns to ensure there is no contact with the magneto.
  14. Replace the small black wire, spark plug and spark plug wire, then test fire the engine.
  15. Shut the engine down and replace all the remaining parts in the reverse order as removed.
You should be good to go after this. If this was helpful please vote yes. Thank You!!

Have a 5600 Gen. with 10 HP B/S engine OHV. Did great during Rita, replaced carb- changed gas-replaced plug- doesn't want to fire it seems. Where Can I find the magneto ? Are there points on the flywheel...

The magneto is by the flywheel. Depending on the age, there maybe points under the flywheel. If so you remove the flywheel and there the points are. Sometimes bugs build cacoons between points, make them inoperable. Newer engines have electronic ignition though. Follow the small wire from the magneto coil ( where the spark plug wire goes) it will either go under the flywheel through a plastic bushing, or to an electronic module. The magneto coils do fail you can test with an ohm meter. Before that test for spark. You can remove the spark plug, and let it rest on the engine to get ground, and turn the engine over. You always need 1-spark, 2 fuel . If you have spark, see if it will hit on starting fluid, if it does, then you have a carb or fuel filter issue. Those shut off valves on the bottom of those tanks, can be a problem

Not sure but I think someone told me it is a knock off of the Honda? If so maybe try comparing? Ck size, Spring tension & etc?
I know not much help but that's where I'd start. Been told by a local small eng shop there aren't internal parts available for the Sumec engines.
