It's probably your keyboard. Some keyboards are limited with it's polyponic capabilities. Some can play many notes at one time, some cut out when it reaches it's limits. Check your manual for specifications.

The use of the Transposer control. I am very much a beginner in music in spite of my advanced years, and I have been puzzling over how to use this control. Would I be correct that all I need do is to...

A SIMPLE way of looking at the transposer is that it shifts EVERY key on the keyboard left (+) or right (-) by the number of the transpose. ALL keys, black and white are counted. As far as counting sharps and flats I would NOT depend on that. The transpose would for instance allow you to play a song you knew in "C" and have the sounds moved to a different key. For instance, a transpose of +2 would move EVERY C to "sounding" D, C# to D#, D# to F, E to F#, F to G, F# to G#, G to A, G# to A#, A to B, A# to C, and finally B would sound C# pitch. Given a key like G for a song that has one sharp (F#) to play this by keying it in the key of "C" you would use a transpose of +6 or minus 6. The number of key positions (including black) between the key you want to play in and the key the song is in. For a song in D that is played in C you would use either a +2 transpose or a -10 depending on whether you wanted the higher or lower octave to sound. Looking at it this way I do NOT believe the method you proposed would work... Look at it the way I described and you won't go wrong.

Everything I play on my hp dv6000 is way lower pitched than what it should be, I have tried toying with the EQ settings but nothing works. Every sound on my speakers plays really low pitched even when I...

ok, if the sound in the headphones is as low then we know it is not your laptop speakers... try to find the laptop master volume which can be controled by an either designated keys or other keys on your keyboard, look for keys showing a picture of speakers on them, they either work directly by clicking them or you need to press the F key while you click them, either way try playing with these and see if anything happen... good luck

My Casio Privia PX-110 is playing two notes at once on just one key. It sounds like I am playing two contigous notes, when only one is being pressed.

IF every key sounds like it is doing that, you may have two voices selected with one of them being transposed.

You may have an "effect" turned on that generates a chorus, layered or multiple voice sounds.

Sound Problem with MAC OS X 10.4.11

This sounds obvious, but the system volume could be down. Go to the System Preferences, and select "Sound". Make sure the output voumne is turned up, and the mute is not on.
If that doesn't work you could try "zapping the pram".
  1. Shut down the computer.
  2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
  3. Turn on the computer.
  4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
  5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound again. Continue this until you hear the startup sound four times.
  6. Release the keys.

Midi vs. Sound

Think of MIDI like the old time player pianos where you put a roll into it and the punches on the paper roll told the piano what notes to play. MIDI is a way for computers and musical instruments to communicate what is being played. When you plug your keyboard into your computer and enable it in Cakewalk, then Cakewalk records what notes you are playing on your keyboard (makes a piano roll file). Then when you tell Cakewalk to play this file back it communicates to your keyboard and says play these notes just like a person was sitting there playing these notes. The distinction here is you are recording and playing back your performance (which keys you pressed, how hard you struck the keys, how long you held the keys for sustain, etc...). No sound is actually being recorded, just the PERFORMANCE. When you play it back, the keyboard regenerates the sounds on the fly just as if you were actually sitting there performing the music again. Same thing applies to other MIDI enabled instruments (drums, guitar, saxaphone, etc...). This opens up all kinds of possibilities, you can redirect the recorded MIDI file to a completely different sound or instrument. Example... you record MIDI of you playing piano song, then you have Cakewalk play this MIDI back to your keyboard but you change the sound on your keyboard to guitar, it will play the same song, but now you will hear guitar instead of piano. Get it?
