Question about Singer Sewing Machines

Open Question

Stop motion knob will not re-tighten on old Singer 99 after winding a bobbin. I can't remove the stop motion knob - it just continues to turn without coming off to access the washer.

It was working fine before I loosened in order to wind the bobbin. Never re-tightened after that.

You can either take the machine in for repairs or, use another sewing machine (if you have one that uses the same type of bobbin) for bobbin winding or purchase a Sidewinder Bobbin Winder - search the Internet for the best price.

Its been idle for too long and needs a good service. Try and trickle some oil behind the stop motion wheel. But what it actually needs is to have the wheel removed and then apply oil to the shaft. Careful when you start again as oil will fly out from the wheel so mind your drapes and wall decor.

SOURCE: I cannot loosen stop motion

Sometimes the knob locks so tight it requires a good strong beefy man to loosen it. Turn it counter clockwise!! You can also wind without loosening the knob, just MAKE SURE to unthread the machine and to sew for winding only. It works for all industrial machines, without loosening the knob.

SOURCE: Needle does not move when I try to sew.

On these old singers, there is a locking washer that controls the tighten and release mechanism. If it is not in the proper place your efforts to tighten and loosen to engage the sewing functions do nothing.

I have a Singer 99-13 with knee control. I wound bobbins but can't get it to sew. Is there something that turns it over to sewing? Thanks. Karen

On the 99-13, you wind the bobbin with the balance wheel in the stop motion position. Thus during bobbin winding, the needle mechanism is disconnected from the rest of the machine. You probably need to tighten the set screw on the balance wheel. The screw is in the center of the balance wheel on the right hand side of the sewing machine. Hold the balance wheel while you turn the screw away from yourself. (You hold the balance wheel and turn the screw over towards you for winding.)

The manual for the 99-13 is available from Singer on their manuals page: http://www.singerco.com/support/instruction-manuals . The direct link to the manual is http://www.singerco.com/uploads/download/9d4377811af9ffbbaa1b8efd50ea962c142a66d9.pdf . Look at figure 5 on page 7 (page 4 of the PDF) and then page 10-11 (page 6 of the PDF) for the bobbin winding directions.

I hope this helps.

What are you calling a stop motion knob? Are you trying to stop the needle from moving while winding a bobbin?

HOW TO I WIND BOBBIN ON SINGER 347

If you mean the Singer Style Mate 347, open the face plate and remove the old bobbin. Then, the first step is to hold the hand wheel and loosen the stop-motion screw inside the hand wheel. (Keep the hand wheel from turning with one hand and turn the stop-motion screw towards the front of the machine.) Place your empty bobbin (hole away from the machine) on the spindle near the bobbin winder switch. Feed the thread from the spool on the spool pin through the eyelet on the top of the machine (near the top thread take up) and then down to and around the bobbin tension disc below the on-off power switch. Pass the thread through from the inside of the bobbin to the outside of the bobbin. Move the bobbin winder switch to On and hold onto the end of the thread. Start the machine and let a few winds get placed on the bobbin then stop for a minute. Cut the thread near the bobbin. Restart and continue winding more thread onto the bobbin until you have enough thread or the bobbin is full (it will stop automatically). Move the bobbin winder switch to off and tighten the stop-motion screw.

For pictures, see pages 6-7 in the manual. It's available as a PDF here: http://www.singerco.com/uploads/download/9b8c1ca7584c2bea7837ca4bf5338af7f1b5380e.pdf . (These are pages 8-9 of the PDF.)

I hope this helps.

Stop motion knob won't tighten

Remove the stop motion wheel and you will see another part that is loose(looks kind of like a washer with ears on it). Reposition this on the shaft and put the stop motion wheel back on. The stop motion wheel was too loose and it allowed the washer to fall off the shaft. The screw is nice to have and it keeps the washer from falling off the shaft but it's not absolutely necessary to use the machine. Just be caredul when winding the bobbin.

Machine No. K1831(256) No.28 how do you set up the stop motion wheel to wind bobbins. It either winds bobbins whilst sewing or just free wheels. I think there must be a way of adjusting this action....
