SOURCE: Only works on manual control,
You probably need a new thermostat. You did not say make or model number. The auto function is a temp operated switch, or a thermostat. That part is most likely bad. If it will run when your turn it on. The Toggle switch is ok.

This can happen because of dust buildup inside. Dust can conglomerate in places like the out-vent. I've seen several times dust form a "mat" across the out-vent (on the inside), such that the computer could not breath at all anymore. This conglomerated dust was so perfectly formed across the out-vent that it looked like a manufactured filter. The first time I saw this it took me a minute to understand what I was seeing ("...that is the outlet for the airflow....why is there a filter....OHHH!!!! That's not a filter!!!"). This dust can also get conglomed in the fan shroud and affect the motor.
Anyway, once over-heated it can cause all kinds of anomalies. To fix this, you have to take the laptop apart. There is no other way to get the dust out of it. So you have to turn the laptop upside down. Remove the battery. Be sure you are grounded, or at least touch something metal that is. Remove all the little screws that hold it together. And carefully open it up. There will be a few wires and you may have to disconnect some. Putting it back together requires patients. I "float" one side over the other side with various things and then do whatever it takes it takes to re-connect the wires. And then it screw back together and your done. Like new again.
I hope this helps you. If yes, please take a sec to rate me. Thanks!

Tips for a great answer:
Aug 22, 2011 | Astoria Argenta SAE-2 "Big Gulp"

Power off the unit using the toggle
switch on the back. Hold down the 'eject' button and turn the toggle
switch back from off to on. This will run a fan test and should eject
your disc. Remember, this will only work on the 20, 40g models. Not
the backwards compatible units with the 4 usb port holes and the
memory card slots.
