Question about Sony KDF-E50A10 50 in. LCD HDTV
I bought my Sony KDF-E50A10 in January 2006, but the label on the back of my tv says it was manufactured in October 2005. Just recently started seeing big blue splotches in the middle of the screen when it is supposed to display black colors, and when it is supposed to display white/light colors, it shows as dingy yellow splotches. It is most noticeable when the screen is all black or all white.
Based on the other post, it looks like I may have to get a technician to look at it and possibly replace the display engine...but I'm hoping there might be some other solution that I can try myself before heading down that expensive direction--I don't want to spend what is tantamount to half of what I originally paid for the tv.
It will be 12 appliance years old in October. Not much justification for trying to repair it.

The Light engine (also known as an optical block) which is essentially the projector part of your TV is failing and needs to be replaced. Sony has extended the warranty on some of its models so you can contact Sony to see if yours is still covered. If not it is outrageously expensive to fix easily over $1000.

My Vizio VX32L was doing the same thing, it just kept getting worse. I could not find a service manual, so I just dug in. I am a tech but I don't work on TVs or any consumer stuff. I found the problem; it was the cable from the main board (J7) to the circuit card up under the power supply (the red and white pair on my cable). I removed the cable and ohmed it out, it tested good so I put it back in and used a dental probe to push the wires tight into the connector and taped it down. It works great now. Hope this will helps.

The optical engine has a build up of dust. This can cause yellow shapes and blotches to appear. It is no easy task on this model to dismantle and clean the engine.
