Z22 palm handheld touchscreen won't respond - i've done soft reset -- several times -- used the 5 way to bring up the touchscreen -- tapped and nothing happened.

Hi, Try doing a hard reset to see if this will correct the problem.

Hold down the power button and at the same time use the tip of your stylus or any other non sharp item and press the inside the reset hole on the back of your palm.
When you see the Palm power logo appear you can let go of the power button and also the one on the back of you unit.
It will display a message asking if you want to do a hard reset and that it will erase all your data. select yes by hitting the up part of your 5 way button on the bottom of your unit. This is the one you use to navigate around your palm screen. After it resets you wil then be prompted to reset the screen by tapping the targets. If it works great. If not then you have something wrong that needs to be looked at. Before you send it in go to:
www.palm.com.
Select pda and then your model. From there go to the support screen and do a live chat. This is free and they may be able to live you some help. Best wishes.

Touch screen on Palm Z22 does not respond

The Data on your Z22 is rock-solid safe, but unlike the answer that states to do a RESET- DO NOT ! The touch screen problem has nothing to do with resetting, it is a failure of the soft plastic top layer of the touch screen. There is a tiny, remote possibility that the logic circuits are out of sync and the touchscreen really is mixed up in a software state, and a SOFT RESET may reset the touch screen, but this is almost unheard of ( but does happen).
I have an entire page on the Z22 and how to maintain, repair and interface it. It is at:
kidbots.com/WEBADD/Z22_PALM_PILOT/Z22_PALM_PILOT.html

I would suggest trying a few tricks listed on my web page, and see if you can get the screen to work again. It is IMPERATIVE to get a hard plastic cover over the screen to keep it working!

Please read over the information on the Z22 page.

good luck

How to do a hard reset on a palm z22?

Hi here are the steps but ensure to backup data before you make a hard reset
Press and hold the power button
While holding the power button, use the tip of the stylus (or a similar object without a sharp tip) to gently press and release the reset button inside the hole on the back of your handheld.
Wait for the Palm Powered™logo to appear, and then release the power button.
When you see the message that warns you about erasing all of the info on your handheld, do one of the following:• Press Up on the 5-way navigator to finish the reset and show the touchscreen.• Press any other button to do a soft reset.
When prompted, tap to align the screen, and then select the language you want to use on your handheld. A screen appears showing the Palm logo and a progress bar.
When the Welcome screenappears, the hard reset iscomplete
Hope this helps and do let me know

Stylus taps to screen don't result in any changes

Hi there JL Dakota. I had many problems with my Z22 over the years. The top layer of the screen is a plastic sheet that must remain stretched completely ABOVE the lower layer of glass that it sits above. Going to Florida, from a colder climate, for example could WARM the screen up a bit, and allow it to stretch, and hit the lower layer. If it touches the lower layer, it shorts out, and will not respond to any touches after that. Putting it in the freezer will shrink the top layer of plastic temporarily, and allow touching the screen to push it down where you touch. Usually this problem is the result of years of NOT protecting the screen from being pushed on by having a HARD COVER over the screen - for example, keeping the Z22 in a pocket, a shirt pocket, a bag, a purse, a briefcase, even in a drawer full of pens, paper, stapler, etc. would TOUCH the screen, and eventually stretch it. If you see my website analysis of the Z22 kidbots.com/WEBADD/Z22_PALM_PILOT/Z22_PALM_PILOT.html , there are many photographs, and discussions on the various typical Z22 problems that I ran into, and the solutions. These include touchscreen problems, and include putting in the freezer, using a heat gun or hot air hair dryer, splitting the top layer and bottom layer of the screen apart, putting in a new screen ($9 US), etc. I discuss many other issues. Immediately getting a hard cover over the unit at all times is the single most important factor! Once the screen top layer is warped, just sitting the Z22 down upside down might let gravity pull the screen gently away from the glass substrate. Rubbing the screen, using your fingers, sitting the Z22 down on an angle, touching the screen with anything, all could cause it to deform and touch the bottom layer constantly... the link again is below. The general circuit board is incredibly tough, and the amount of abuse it took when I tore it apart repeatedly is amazing. Generally it is bullet proof. The dying battery, the extremely delicate touch screen, and the possibility of buttons shorting, are the biggest problems. Do take a look at the full discussion on the subject at the link. Good luck. Screen problem

Sometimes 3rd party apps that don't work so well with the palms can freeze them up.

You could do a hard reset and when you initially sync the palm, when it asks you for a profile choose a new one and see if this method removes your problem.

Does the calibrator keep looping or not seem to work?
If you can access the calibrator, but it loops through the target sequence (repeatedly asking you to tap the targets), there may be a physical problem that's causing your touchscreen to be confused:
  • Do you use an adhesive screen protector? A screen protector which is trapped under the screen edge may interfere with touchscreen calibration. Occasionally, just having the screen protector on the screen can cause the issue. Try removing the screen protector.
  • You may have debris trapped under the edge of the screen. Use the corner of a piece of thin, stiff paper (copier paper works well) to very gently slide all around the edge of the screen. Don't let the corner of the paper travel more than an eighth of an inch under the screen edge frame. By doing this, you may be able to dislodge small particles of debris trapped under the frame.
  • A heavy impact or scrape to the touchscreen can cause permanent damage. If your touchscreen is damaged, you may need a repair

Broken screen

The problem could be the touchscreen but, typically, with the Z22 it's more of a configuration problem. I would recommend doing a "hard reset" after syncronizing. To reset the unit to factory specs hold in the reset (in the back) and the power button simultaneously for, at least, five seconds. Instead of the Palm icon you'll see a prompt to push up on the touchpad to reset to factory defaults. Then, go through the entire setup process, including the Digitizer to initialize and calibrate the touchpad. Hopefully, that should restore the touchpad. Otherwise, well, replacing that thing yourself is NOT easy.

You can find replacements easily on eBay.
