SOURCE: Machine does not fill with water

I had a Zanussi d/w up until about 5 years ago and there were two perennial problems that required attention. First of all, there was a double solenoid inlet valve for the water supply at the back, one part was the main fill, the other was a supply to the water softener - big plastic lump in the bottom under the salt filler. The main fill solenoid would fail about every 2 years and I would buy a replacement directly from Zanussi for about £10. I believe the failure may have been due to the fact that the machine was filled from the hot supply. This was allowed in the specification but the higher temperature may have led to failure. (Side note) In any case, it is better to fill dishwashers with cold water anyway because during the initial part of the wash cycle proteins are rinsed off rather than being stuck on the items, and secondly, heating from cold increases the contact time of the wash detergent solution and also improves results. If the solenoid controlling the supply to the water softener has failed, it may well lead to the phenomenon you are seeing because the regeneration cycle happens after the wash in most machines. If you feel comfortable about using a mains tester(a neon screwdriver one would do) and can *safely* reach the solenoid with power on and the machine the right way up, then you could see whether power is reaching the regeneration side of the valve or not. If it is, and water is not entering then you have the culprit. Another area that affects filling is the level switch. Generally these are pneumatically operated device looking like a flat drum, about 8cm across and 1cm or so thick. They are generally mounted up high in the machine or door and have two or three wires on terminals and a small flexible plastic tube leading somewhere into the wet area of the machine. As the water level rises, water goes part way up the tube and air above it operates the switch to turn off the water. Sometimes there are two levels used and hence two switches inside this assembly working at different pressures. One could have gone. Another problem is that gunk can get in the lower part of the tube and reduce or block it from detecting. and generally this results in no filling at all. Hope this helps!

SOURCE: wash cycle

Check first that the filter located inside the machine (on bottom) is clean. In case it clean - The problem is with the pump. It could be a blockage between pump and the tub, or just a defective pump (The pump takes suction from the tub and forces water up through the spray arms, which spray the dishes. The water then simply drops back into the tub for recirculation). Good luck !!

SOURCE: GE frontload washer will not wash cycle or spin out

Thanks to Guest #2 our laundry is back in action and we're not waiting for a serviceperson. We took the front panel off, unscrewed the white plug and was sure our plastic drawer was open to catch the water, a load's worth. We found a small screw driver, 8 or so pony holders, some change, drill bits, bark, games pieces, can tops, etc... unbelievable. Thanks SO MUCH for the hint!

Does it make the same noise when it's just filling or just when the motor starts? Usually just filling the dishwasher opens a valve and doesn't run the pump. If it makes noise during filling the valve may be getting hot and shorting, or may have a loose connection, or air may be in the water supply line causing the valve to bounce. If it takes a long time to fill the filter may be clogged.

Drain Pump

If the dishwasher is loud during operation, the drain pump might be defective or might have some debris in it. This is a common problem.

Circulation Pump

If the dishwasher is loud during operation, and the noise is a continuous drone similar in speed to the circulation pump sound, it's likely that the circulation pump motor bearings have failed. Once this happens the circulation pump will have to be replaced, the bearings are not repairable.

Drain Impeller

If the dishwasher is loud during operation, the drain impeller might be broken, or there might be debris in the pump. Generally, to gain access to the pump the top of the pump housing will have to be removed.

Pump and Motor Assembly

If the dishwasher is loud the motor bearings, drain impeller or wash impeller might have worn out. All three of these components are part of the pump and motor assembly. It may be possible to replace one of the impellers, but the motor bearings cannot be repaired. In that case the pump and motor assembly will need to be replaced.

Wash Impeller

The wash impeller is a small, plastic blade. The motor spins the impeller forcing water through the spray arms to clean the dishes. If one or more blades has broken off of the impeller the dishwasher is loud. The impeller can also scrape against the pump housing if it is damaged, warped or bent.

Circulation and Drain Pump Motor

Water Inlet Valve

The water inlet valve is an electrically controlled water valve. When it is new, the water inlet valve is very quiet. Over time, the diaphragm inside the valve deteriorates and deforms. This deformation interacts with the water rushing in and can cause a loud vibration, buzzing, squealing or other noises. If the dishwasher is loud during the filling cycle, replacing the water inlet valve may solve the problem.

Dishwasher does not go into the wash cycle the other cycles work but it does not wash the dishes .when I open the door the soap is on the bottom of the dish washer .T he water comes in rinses the drians...

you'll need to determine if the wash motor is running during the wash cycle(listen for noise from the motor). If the motor is not running there is an electrical problem possibly in the motor or the timer. If motor is running but not washing, the pump impellor maybe loose on the motor shaft. The impellor was press fit onto the motor shaft and cannot be retightened. The motor and pump assembly would have to be replaced, somewhat expensive to do.

Kenmore elite dishwasher, does not get the dishes wet

sounds like wash motor is not going . it will fill and control thinks motor is working . then it will drain wash water / ( drain pump is a different motor ) and then refill and so on .. never washes but fills and drains and heats. ( look for leakage under the motor i'm sure you will find some ..

Smelly dishes from Kenmore Ultra Wash

If you post the model number of your dishwasher plus its approximate age (in years) I can help more.

But the most common cause is a weakening pump motor. On many dishwashers, the wash pump motor is also the drain motor. Replacing that motor / pump assembly will solve the problem. While you are replacing the pump, check the heating element to confirm that it is not shorted out or broken.

For now, add a cap full of bleach to the water _after_ the initial dishwasher fill cycle ends and the wash cycle begins. White vinegar would also work, but this will not fix your problem.

Good Luck!

Dishes not cleaned

When ever I hear of a dishwasher "suddenly" not cleaning properly, with spots on the glassware and soap not dissolving:

-If the spots are white patches, you can suspect the DW detergent powder. Go buy a name brand of detergent powder and I bet you will see a dramatic improvement. You may need to run a cycle or two with white vinegar added (up to two cups added after the DW starts, fills and begins to wash.)

-If the spots are a film / slime, you should suspect that the heating element. For the dW to be effective cleaning and rinsing clear, the DW needs to raise the water temp during the ~wash~ cycle (after the detergent dispenser has magically opened. After the heating element has been replaced, you will see an immediate improvement.

-If you had reported food debris sticking to dishes, (which you didn't), the first thing to do is clear the holes in the wash arms, then open the sump area , remove the filter assembly and inspect closely with a flashlight to locate blocking debris. (watch out for broken glass!) Inspect the impeller and make sure it is not damaged. If after assembly, the cleaning is still poor, it is time to replace the wash pump / motor assembly.

Good Luck! Ask more questions as needed!

Is The Motor Running During The Wash? If not you have a bad motor.

Fills with water but won't wash.

It could be a motor or a pump issue. The dishwasher has a motor that attached to a pump which forces the water up into the sprayer arms and during the drain cycle, it pushes the water out of the dishwasher. The motor (and pump) located beneath the dishwasher. Check if motor spins. In case it spins, the problem is with the pump ,in case it doesn't spin it could be a motor problem or a motor and pump problem. Good luck

Dishwasher Repair

Ebers, you have a seperate wash and drain motor on this model. When you remove the bottom panel the drain pump will be on the right and the circulation (wash) pump will be in the rear. You are going to have to verify that you have power getting to the wash motor. Sometimes this is difficult without removing the dishwasher. The motor may have a quick connect harness going to it that you can check voltage there. If you have voltage to the motor during the wash cycle and it's not running, well, there's the problem. If no voltage, then it's probably a timer issue. Catriver..post back
