Question about John Deere Garden

John Deere LX280 cranks but won't start

I have replaced spark plugs, fuel filter, oil filter and oil change, and bought a new battery. Air filter foam was dirty so I cleaned with soap and water, dried, put small amount of oil on foam, checked the paper part-not very dirty, so I replaced it. It ran for about 5 minutes and now it will not start for me again. I've rechecked the plugs, oil filter & checked oil, air filter, battery. I have not done anything with the carburetor or tired starting fluid yet. I'm not really sure where to spray the fluid?? Oh fuses have not been checked either as I was unsure of which one to check--there are so many!!! Can you help? I am a 60 yr old lady that does a lot of DYI projects. I would like this to be a success story also!! Thanks, Cheryl P.S. I mow all the lawns on my side of street-5 lawns-and I haven't been able to mow any yet. Onr more thing, last fall the mower died in the middle of the lawn. I put gas in it, wouldn't start. Then it got really cold, so I covered it with a tarp and left it sit. I know, BIG,BIG mistake. Plus, sometime during the Winter the gas cap mysteriously disappears. I know these added details will better help you, help me! Thanks again for your time and your help in advance!

Probabaly a good idea to start with a basic service:

- Fresh gas?
- Change spark plugs
- Change oil and filter
- Underside of mower deck clean and free of all built up grass?
Hope this helps.

Engine oil does a couple of things, lubricates and cools. Your crankcase probably takes about 2 qts. Fill it to full and park it over something clean to see if there are leaks.

For your engine to run it needs fuel and air. If the engine is dying, more than likely you have a fuel/air issue. Check your fuel lines for leaks, replace your fuel filter. Clean or replace your air cleaner. Make sure your tank cap can breathe, so air can replace the gas going to the engine.

John deere mower Won't start

Sounds like the carb is varnished up and needs to be rebuilt. They make rebuild kits depending on the carb number and you can rebuild it.

John deere 420 trouble starting getting gas and

The engine needs air, so be sure the air filter is clean. If it is not, replace it.

The engine needs spark. Replace the spark plug and be sure that the battery has a complete charge.

The engine needs good fuel so be sure the gas is newly purchased, not gas that has been sitting around for months.
