Question about Washing Machines

Open Question

My basement laundry floods all the time. Ran a snake down the floor drain, clear until about 18' then stops. After the p-trap, isnt it a straight shot to the tank?

I have a basement laundry that floods all the time. I ran a snake down the floor drain, clear until about 18' then stops. Whats weird is that I also ran a hard hose through my cleanout into the septic tank, water runs hard and clear but when the hose is extracted, there still is standing water in the cleanout.

SOURCE: Water overflowing from drain pipe

The problem with the new washing machines, is that they dump 20-22 gallons of water in 4-5 seconds. This amount is far more than the garden hose test will submit the drain to. Here are a number of solutions, I hope that one of these will help you.

#1 As mentioned above, you can restrict the flow of the drain pipe. I recommend a 3/4" x 6" brass nipple, or a 1/2" x 6" brass nipple, depending on your specific situation. The brass nipple will not corrode like a galvanized nipple.

#2 There is also a rubber cap that you attach to the drain pipe that fits around the drain hose tightly.

#3 Some situations might require that you have to raise your drain pipe. It is recommended that it be at least 36". This allows for gravity to assist the drain.

#4 Some situations will require that the drain pipe be increase in diameter. Older plumbing applications were installed using 1 1/2" piping. With the newer washing machine discharge volume, the 1 1/2" pipes will not support the discharge. Your drain line will need to be changed to 2". This option will be one of the more costly fixes, depending on the amount of line that needs to be changed.

#5 Some plumbing installations installed without a p-trap will need to be changed. The p-trap keeps sewer gas from coming back into the house. It also allows for a smooth transition into the drain line. Any restrictions in the drain line (i.e. ells, tees,) will cause the soap in the gray water to foam up which will cause the drain line to slowly back up.

I hope these solutinons help.

Disconnect the drain hoses and check for blockages. If no blockage "time" the drain interval. If it's more than 6 minutes it's the pump. Also make sure you're using the correct type of soap so the ball check valve on the bottom of the outer drum isn't getting fouled with excessive suds. Also disconnect the drain hose from your house plumbing and let it free flow on it's own. This will tell you if the blockage is in your plumbing and not in the machine.

Hi

The problem is with the float switch mechanism located at the bottom of the unit...either this has gone bad and should be replaced or the pump itself is bad & should be checked. Hope this helps...please post back for further assistance.

The tub is clogged with hair

Few plumbing issues such as Dripping faucets. Running toilets. Leaky valves. Clogged bathtubs can be solved by our own trying few things.
1)Firstly lookout for what is causing blockage such as soap or hair inside the pipeline blocking water just pull it out from pipes.
2)Secondly use a plunger(Tool used by plumber to clear clog) pour some water in bathtub to cover the plunger block the overflow of water with rag.Place the plunger over drain pull up & down 5 to 6 times.
3)Lastly if still the clog is not cleared try out with snake a long flexible steel cable wound on a handle In a sink you just feed the snake down the drain, but on a bathtub you need to feed the snake down through the overflow plate opening. Start by feeding about 3 feet of the snake into the opening, turning it as you push it forward. You will feel some resistance as you work the snake through the trap under the drain, and the turning helps to move the head through the trap. The snake should either break up the clog by pushing its way through it, or your turning will hook the end of the snake onto the clog and you can pull it out.

After trying with above if still there is plumbing issue call sewer line repair services for help.

Shower in basement is backed up. Wondering if it's because a floor drain is covered up.

sounds more like the drain line is clogged between the shower and the main stack, and shares venting and drain with your kitchen sink. Have a plumber run a drain snake down from your kitchen drain (after the 'P' trap ) to clear the line. A covered over floor drain should have no effect on the back-up.

When flushing , the bowl will not drain properly or fast enough to discharge the waste, also the bowl will not fill back up to the correct level with clean water, Acts as if there is some type of blockage...

It sounds like there is a buildup of waste at the top of the trap in the toilet. A closet snake should resolve the problem. You do not have to snake more than a couple of feet of the drain if the buildup is at the top of the trap which is always dry. Try the closet snake and a couple of buckets of hot water while flushing the bowl. Rigid makes a good closet snake and is worth the cost. After clearing, make it a habit of holding down the lever until you hear the tank empty when flushing down solids. Especially with the 1.6 gallon tanks.

If I do a small load after a large load, on the rinse cycle teh water gushed up through the drain in the floor and floods the floor. The plumber snaked 50 feet twice and poured down acid and it still

Since the plumber snaked 50 feet, one must conclude that the blockage is beyond the 50 foot mark.

Shame on the plumber who stopped at 50 feet. he should have snaked all the way to the street system if you live in a city or to the septic tank if you live in the country.

I would call him back and tell him that he needs to finish the job.

For years we have been dealing with sewer gases coming into the house. Sometimes it would get to the point of backup or the toilets would not flush. The city will come in and put the snake out well onto...

I once solved a problem like this -- it was the bathtub drain which had no P-trap on it. This could fit your situation -- when the drain is snaked there is less waste to produce odor. When the line gets sludge in it again, the odor returns.

No p-trap means the odor can come up thru the line with nothing to stop it.

Has anyone checked to see if all fixtures have p-traps? One way to investigate, if you can't see the plumbing, is to run drain water somewhere in the house and see if you can hear the drain water running when you put your ear to each of the plumbing fixture drains.

You would probably have to run the drain water from a fixture which is "in front of" the fixture you are checking so the water would run past it on the way to the main drain.

Drain Problems on American Standard A/C and Heat pump

You have a plastic condensate pan and you could have developed a crack in it. But most likely, there is still something that is clogging the drain. You may need to run a snake through it instead of using air. If you ran a snake through then it's probably a crack. Sometimes the crack can be at the outlet where something might have hit the pipe. Also, if the unit has a "draw through" coil, then there needs to be a p-trap installed on the unit to keep water from being drawn back into the unit while it is running. If it is a "blow through" coil and a p-trap is installed then remove it. The p-trap can restrict the flow of water leaving the unit and the least bit of debris can cause the unit to overflow. Draw through means the blower motor is pulling air over the coils and sits over top of the coil. Blow through means that the blower is pushing air into the coils and sits down below the coil. Hope this helps.

SUPER clogged drains

About all you could do is rent an electric snake and clear the main drain. The shower drain line (if you follow it) may also have a port to use a snake.

Good luck!
