SOURCE: We mow 2 acres with a Greenfield ride-on.

Hi i have seen this with most greenfield models The only way to fix this problem is to replace the drive clutch assy as it ends up to costly to replace the worn parts : shaft, clutch plates & drive pulleys.
In most cases replacing these parts has led to a new assy six months later.

SOURCE: LX176 Electric Clutch Slips

The clutch is basically a big 12volt elecrto magnet. When it gets power it grabs the magnet and turns the blades. Usually they either work or they dont.
I would check the relay first. Then check for a loose wire or bad connection.
If it comes down to a failed clutch then be prepared to spend between 150 and 300 bucks. remove the deck and unplug the 2 wire connector from the clutch then remove the center bolt from the crankshaft and the clutch will slide off the end of the shaft. There will be a bracket or pin that holds the clutch and prevents it from spinning. Pay attention to how the bracket or pin is situated and be sure to reinstall the new clutch the same way.

SOURCE: Mower starts, but when I let off clutch, it dies.

when the seat goes out of adjustment due to the crappy adjustment bolt design, the bolt inadvertantly engages the safety switch under the seat.

Can the clutch be adjusted on an unidentified riding mower/tractor?

Probably not if its a hydraulic transmission. The first thing to do is fit a new drive belt as this is the most common cause of what appears to be clutch slip.

PTO turns without mower shaft inserted. Mower blades turn when rotating shaft by hand. Slide shaft back into PTO and nothing is turning. Belts on mower deck look ok.

Sounds like your magnetic clutch is not fully engaged or slipping and cannot handle the load of the mower deck..try this...Using a good pair of snug fitting gloves..with the engine in its lowest idle position and the shaft out of the clutch turn on the carefully see if you can manually stall ( make the clutch slip) if it does sip or stall it needs replaced.just be careful....good luck..

Can a bad battery cause clutch to slip?

Not likely. But to eliminate that possibility try connecting a battery charge to the battery and try engaging the blades then. Also check all electrical connection in system for corrosion and tightness. Lastly With compressed air blow all dirt and debris from the mower, especially clutch area and Hydraulic pumps. Check tension on blade drive belt.

Clutch cable installation

  • Put your mower in the lowest position and open the hood.
  • 2 Lift up the retainer spring that holds the clutch cable to the adjustment bracket. Pull the cable out of the bracket.
  • 3 Remove the clutch cable spring from the idler bracket. Pry the spring open with a pair of pliers if necessary.
  • 4 Hook a new clutch cable spring over the idler bracket and squeeze it closed.
  • 5 Slip the clutch cable under the retainer spring.

Is the belt slipping? If it's slipping you'll notice it, because it'll smoke pretty soon. If, as you watch it under varying load, it slows down with the blades then the belt is fine.

If it's not the belt then it's going to be the electric clutch that drives the belt. Get your voltmeter out and tap into the wires that go to the clutch, watch it as the mower runs. Anything under about 13V and the clutch may slip. If the voltage is good then the clutch is worn out. They don't cost too much, I'm pretty sure they're well under $100 still.

Make sure the wires that plug into the clutch are making a good connection. You want to check the voltage between the switch and clutch so that you're also checking the switch- if it's got a little crud in it, or a bad connection farther up the line, it can cause the clutch to slip, and you'll see this as the voltage dropping.
