Blades run in reverse and only for a short distance going forward

We have and MTD Cub Cadet 3185. The blades don't seem to have us much power as they used to. The blades will stay engaged when in reverse. When going forward, they take a few seconds to get up enough speed to actually cut, but after a few yards the blades eventually turn off.

We do know that the safety switch is good on it.

Any help would be unbelievably welcome.

According to the info i have this tractor has a disengage to prevent mowing in reverse, the blades should stop in reverse, meaning the pto should stop and have to be reset. i dont see a mention of reverse overide switch. are the springs for the idler pulley on the deck hooked up and is the belt good and right length. if so you have a bad clutch or as i said before a saftey switch.

Ok when was the last time you had the hydrolic fluid changed ?
or the oil for that mater ?
oil breaks down
you wouldnt cook your french fries in year old oil but you will cook your tranny with it in a cub or mtd machine 100-120 hours max for the fluids in an mtd b4 they start to loose texture or viscosity ( sound it out)
hydro pumps di die mtd has 1 monster that is quite expensive also have you changed the filter on the rear axcel lately or is it full of nut butter and in bypass mode
100 hours doesnt seam like much but for a tractor it is

My RZT 50 turns blades on when levers are pulled back instead of shutting of and shuts off when in forward position ? could it be a switch is bad if yes what switch?

Sounds like someone has been working on the wiring, probably trying to bypass the reverse cut out switches . If you follow your steer control lever down under the plastic console covers there will be a switch, one on each steer lever by where it hinges. I don't think the switch is bad because it would not work at all if it was.It is like a door bell switch, when you pull back on the steer control lever it pushes it in and disconects the circuit to the PTO switch and the blades quit until you push them forwards and lets the curent through again. Also check the push pull PTO switch .Every safety switch on the tractor will meet at that switch and plug into it, . That model cub RZT50 has to have the worst switches ever made, but they are available and cheap on ebay. Plunger Switch 430362 430 362 for Cub Cadet Troy Bilt MTD 700 Series 725... After reverse, my cub cadet zero turn mower pto will not re engage the blades. sporadic up to the point of stopping altogether. is it the switch or clutch?

I would guess it is the switch. My Cub Cadet has a safety feature where the blades (PTO) stop when you hit reverse. There is an override where you turn the key back about a quarter turn or so and hit a button right above the key to make the blades run even in reverse. Therefore, I would guess the ignition switch is the problem but I can't be certain. Or it could be the electric switch that engages the PTO.

Model RZT42. When you back up the blades shut and when I go back to forward, the blades will not engage.

Some of the newer riding mowers have a safety system on them that won't let the blades work while you are backing up. If the blades are engaged and you put it in reverse they will stop. You usually have to reset the blades, turn them off then back on, when you put it back in forward.

Cub Cadet-Blades won't stay engaged

sounds like either a saftey switch problem or a bad drive clutch on the pto. usuallly the mower shuts down, not the blades, they may have changed this though. my best guess would be a safety sensor try calling your local cub dealer and talking to the repair person he can shed light on the problem.

When cutting with pto on and going into reverse and forward again the pto cuts off

That is a safety feature. When the blades are engaged and you go into reverse, they will shut off until you get out of reverse and turn the blades on again.
