What is sciatica? I think I may have it.

Sciatica is a condition that usually affects one leg, with a pain that runs from the buttock down the leg and can also radiate into back pain. The sciatic nerve is the largest in the body and runs from the base of the spine down to the back of the knee. Pain occurs when the nerve gets compressed.

If you think you have sciatica you should go to your doctor as there are treatments and drugs that could help.

Can anyone tell me any basic back exercises for strengthening and pain relief?

Here are two exercises that I like to use for my back. They aren't complicated to do, you just need a bit of space;

Back Flexion Exercise;

Lie on your back and pull your knees to your chest while stretching the head forward, until a comfortable stretch is felt.

Knee to Chest Stretch;

Lie on your back with your knees bent and both heels on the floor. Put both hands behind one knee and pull it up to your chest.

Im looking to work on a back exercise program that I can do at home every day. Not something too long. Any ideas?

I always like the advice that the mayo clinic gives and they have a 15 minute exercise program for sufferers of back pain that you might find helpful;

What are the causes of back pain? I want to try and understand why I keep suffering from episodes of back pain.

Back pain is most frequently triggered by everyday activities, even from standing or sitting badly. Here are some other causes;

- Driving for a long time without taking a break or driving in an awkward position.

- Twisting

- Stretching too far

- Repetitive strain injury

My doctor told me that I might need to have surgery to fix my snoring problem. He said they do something to the tissue in the throat. Does anyone know what this surgery is? It sounds pretty horrible.

The surgery itself has a really long name - uvulopalatopharyngoplasty which is often called the UPPP for short. The surgery involves tightening and trimming any excess tissue from the throat as it's the excess tissue that blocks the airways and causes snoring.

Possible side effects of the surgery are;

Bleeding

Infection

Pain

Nasal Congestion

But it can also bring long term benefits, so it's a good idea to discuss your concerns with the doctor and ask what other options you could try before you opt for surgery.
