How does an earthquake alarm work?

An earthquake alarm provides an early warning by detecting an earthquake's soundwaves before the shear wave hits your area. The alarm will detect a quake that is even many miles away! A loud alarm will then go off.

Political scientist

Earthquakes have ended cultures in past history since they change local and national economies for uncertain periods of time.
Loss of life, loss of electricity, loss of natural gas, fires, looting, loss of communications, loss of job and income, loss of incoming food at stores, loss of port facilities, loss of roads bridges railroads ... these things affect local politics, and ultimately national politics.

The general purpose of political structures is to keep things running smoothly and solve problems such as law enforcement, transportation, sewage, public health, currency, standard business practice, economic exchange.

These things come to dramatic halt with large earthquake, and can cause total collapse of local political structures in times of unrest, and severely disrupt political structures in times of peace, even if help is available from outside sources.

Political scientist would study the affect that earthquakes have on a wide variety of things. Anything that would cause the mayor's phone to ring, or the governor's phone to ring could be a political science topic. If all the roads and bridges and railroads were destroyed going to the port of LA, just imagine how many phone calls the mayor and governor would receive. Then imagine what the mayor and governor would say or do. Every aspect of this situation could be a research topic for political scientist

Causes of Tsunami

Tsunami is a Japanese word meaning ''huge wave'' that refers to a series of large ocean waves. It is caused basically due to underwater earthquake, Richter magnitude exceeding 7.5 to produce a destructive tsunami.

Concept can be summarized as follow:

The earth is constantly moving on large tectonic plates. When these tectonic plates moves past each other, collide and/or slide under one another an earthquake results. This is what happened with the recent tsunami that devastated Southern Asia. A massive earthquake in the Indian Ocean measuring 10.0 on the Richter scale jolted the seabed causing the sudden displacement of a very large volume of water. The earthquake temporarily produces a fluctuation in the mean sea level of a specified area. Waves quickly form as the displaced water tries to recapture equilibrium by filling the vacuum that was created. Tsunamis are a series of extremely long waves that are created after a large volume of water is displaced. The amount displaced must be significant enough to create waves underwater in the vast ocean. Waves are formed as the displaced water mass moves under the influence of gravity to regain its equilibrium. The larger the displacement, the larger the wave generated.
