Printer ''Scanner Failure''

Scanner Failure.
Turn power off then on again.

I have an hp psc 2175 all-in-one printer, scanner, copier. My printer is stuck in copy mode. I can't print or do anything. I get the scanner failure error after leaving the printer on. Lately I've upgraded my computer with more RAM and bought 2 new processors. I have the proper software and have always used the same printer with my computer with no trouble in the past. I've already tried unplugging it. Also my ink cartridge is empty, could this be the problem?

What OS, xp or vista?
This could be a usb problem. See articles here , here, and here.
Check the faceplate, then I'd try resetting the printer, by following intructions for partial or full reset here and here.
An empty cartridge can cause problems, but as long as it's still installed correctly, you should be able to perform copy/scan functions.
You could check the media sensor to make sure the light is coming on...see here.
There is a firmware update for your printer, see here. Updated firmware and drivers could help.

I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue. If you need further assistance, please post back with a comment to this thread.

When I turn the printer on, a rhythmic banging sound starts

Is the scanner transport lock engaged?

This is either a screw, pin, Clip, Slideswitch or button that keeps the delicate scanner head from moving during shipment.

Look for it in the back and on bottom. If that isn't it, then the driver circuit for the stepping/space positioner motor is bad and you need a techie like me to fix... or just get a new AIO for $39.95 from Wal Mart.

Hp psc 2179 all-in-one printer

Using the instructions found here

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&cc=us&docname=c00553775&dlc=en&product=90809

I opened the scanner and found that the cold-cathode lamp is failing. Moving the optical assembly away from its home position (to the middle of the scanner) allows the unit to initialize so at least the printer works.

I'll investigate availability of replacement lamps.

SCANNER FAILURE

This is probably a power issue. If you have many devices plugged in to one socket, the printer can't get enough power to start up or start the scanner. If you have a power extended cable, remover it and plug in te printer direct in the wallsocket.
