Air conditioner fan comes on then surges for compressor and stops

The fan comes and fine and when the compressor trys to kick start it surges and clicks off the compressor start up with fan still blowing. Is there a way to check if compressor is shorted out or something with a volt meter. I have check it my self with no reading which means to me that the compressor is still good. Anybody have any shortcuts to recommend.

Comressors cycling on and off is usually a sign of a low refrigerant charge, which likely means you have a leak in the system. there is no such thing as a perfect compressor seal so you may just need to charge it up.

You can check if theres power to the compresor by pulling the wires off it and turn it on with the volt meter at its terminals if there's power the comprresor is either burned out jamed or grounded.

What causes compressor to work fine then shut down and not come back on for an extended amount of time?

Sometimes these AC's need to be removed and given a damm good cleaning with a spray hose, and any filters replaced. Clean the internal fan(s).
This can sometimes fix overharting of the compressor or misleading air temp sensing..

The air conditioner makes a loud sound when the ac trys to kick in. When i put it under fan it works fine and makes no noise.

Sounds like your compressor is seized/stuck and the unit needs a new compressor. If this is the case it should make a loud buzzing noise for a while and then click when it stops trying.

Whether its a central air unit or a wall unit, make sure the condensor is clean and air can flow thru it
make sure the condensor fan is running, the condensor fan keeps the compressor from over heating
if the condensor fan stops running the compressor will over heat and trip the circuit breaker. good luck!

You amy ahave a bvad capacitor on the outside unit. It starts the fan and the compressor. You can change this yourself. Open the outside panel and you will see a silver canister with terminals out the top. Replace this and I think your problem will go away. On the cap. it will say something like 30uf 5uf 370 ot 440 Just get these numbers and get a new one. Russ

Compressor won't kick off

What happens when started in just fan mode? Sounds like relay stuck.

Carrier air conditioner cycles on and off

The compressor/condenser is being called all the time. The reason it goes off is because the evaporator (indoors) freezes up when the fan is told to turn off by the thermostat. This further cooling lowers the low side pressure below the low limit switch point turning off the compressor unit.
Solution: Make sure the thermostat is wired correctly. Green wire is usually the compressor wire but maybe not.

Air conditioner fan will not come on and unit will run for 1 minute and stop

You hear the compressor kick in (Hum) but no fan comes on? Will the fan come on when just in fan mode, not cool, or do you have that set-up?

Compressor is not kicking in

Probably power surge shorted out the main board. If so it will need to be replaced. Gotta call for service.
