Do we boil the water and sugar together or can we just mix the water and sugar together and then add it to the hummingbird feeder?

Best to boil it because it sterilizes the water.

HOW TO COOK CAKES IN SUNBEAM SLOW COOKER


Ingredients

Original recipe makes 1 cake
  • 2 cups white sugar
  • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water


  • PREP20 mins
  • COOK3 hrs
  • READY IN3 hrs 50 mins

Directions

  1. Spray crock of a large slow cooker with cooking spray.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk the sugar, flour, cocoa, baking soda, baking powder and salt. In a separate small bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, oil and vanilla until well combined. Whisk in the boiling water. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry and mix well.
  3. Pour the cake batter into the prepared slow cooker.
  4. Set slow cooker to "Low". Cook until cake has no wet spots on top and has pulled away from the sides of the crock, about 3 hours. Turn off slow cooker and allow cake to rest for 30 minutes before serving.

When to feed hummingbirds in New Hampshire


I lived in NH & VT for 20yrs, and only fed them in Spring & Summer. They have a reeeally long flight south in the Fall, so continuing to feed them is not beneficial to them. We can help encourage them to get on their way before the temps drop. And they have little to no body fat to protect them from the cold. I feed them 1 part sugar mixed with 4 parts water. Also, cleaning the sticky feeder with hot water, weekly, is helpful. Happy birding!

How to make stickytoffee pudding


Ingredients For the pudding For the toffee sauce Preparation method
  1. Preheat the oven to 180C/370F/Gas 4.
  2. Mix the dates, bicarbonate of soda and the water together in a bowl and leave to soak for ten minutes.
  3. In a clean bowl, cream the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy.

This is a custard base recipe
(using eggs and cream along with vanilla extract)

Ingredients:
4 egg yolks
1/2 pint (250ml) milk
1/2 pint (250ml) double/heavy cream
4 oz (100g) sugar or caster sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla extract (or according to taste)

First of all beat and mix together the egg yolks and sugar until thick. Separately, pour the milk into a saucepan and scald it (bring slowly up to boiling point). Pour the hot milk into the egg yolks and sugar mix whilst continuously stirring. Then pour the mixture back into the pan and heat gently, stirring until the custard thickens - DO NOT BRING TO THE BOIL OR IT WILL PROBABLY CURDLE. When you can see a film form over the back of your spoon it's time to remove the saucepan from the heat. Leave to cool.

This is the custard base and one you can use in many other ice cream recipes where you want a rich, creamy ice cream.

When the custard base is cold, stir in the cream and then the vanilla extract, then transfer the whole mixture into your Ice cream Maker and freeze.
