Did you try to disengage the safety feature that should shut the tractor off when the blades are engaged and the tractor is placed in reverse? I believe that it is located under the shift leaver

sounds like your drive belt is slipping.
look under your engine (you may have to raise the cover to engine to do this), see if the belt that is around the pully which is on your engine drive shaft is on correctly or is in need of replacing.

Does it have gears or a hydrostatic (automatic) transmission?
If it's a gear model, sounds like a loose drive belt.
If it's hydrostatic, it could be a belt problem or a problem inside the transmission. If it's a tranmission problem, this is not good. Many of the transmissions on riding lawn mowers are not serviceable - they are just replaced.
