Question about Computers & Internet

Canon pixma mp730 alarm light suddenly went on, and LCD says "check printer press resume button." I've already tried: 1) Owner's manual says "turn off printer, unplug, wait 15 seconds, then restart....if problem persists call our Customer Care Center" (useless!) 2) pressing resume 3) pressing cancel. 4) opening the printer top; notably, the print head carriage doesn't move into view, as is normal (a clue?) help!

Following your instructions, I reached in to try pulling the the print head/cartridge carriage toward the center. It's very hard on this model to get much of a grip on it, but in any event it doesn't budge -- it doesn't "fight" me (I know what that feels like -- where you can move it a bit but it immediately pulls back). It just won't budge.

I really want to keep this printer because it's worked so well for years -- and the new ones require Canon brand cartridges that cost 10 x as much.

But I know that "bringing it in" (where?) probably means throwing it away bc the cost of repair is usually > cost of replacement.

Any other suggestions for diagnosis and home treatment?

    Thanks

    Tom

I can't see why the driver would have anything to do with it. The problem has nothing to do with the connection with the computer. Even if I disconnect the computer and use it simply as a copier, it exhibits the same symptoms?

Is there no other way to diagnose the problem other than to "try to move the print cartridge", shake the machine or look for loose wires?

I was hoping for something a little more sophisticated....

"take it to a shop" would be a complete waste of time, because the cost of repair is virtually certain to exceed the cost of replacement.

The reason I want to try to save this old printer is a) it was working fine until it suddenly stopped, and b) the newer Canon printers only work with Canon ink, which costs roughly 10 times what I have paid, for years, for refilled cartridges.

At this point I'd like to sugget you to take a vaccum cleaner. Put it on medium blower and blow your printer with it from backside so whatever paper bits and dust is inside comes out from the front then blow it from the front also. But before that don't forget to remove the power cord and data cable. While moving the cartridge carrier if you would have removed the power cord you won't have faced that much problem. Now do the same this time also move the cartridge carrier left and right and clean the iron road with a cloth. Take out your printers CD and take your printer to a different PC install your driver on that PC and connect your printer over there and try to take a print out. In future never do anything inside your printer with hands till you have removed power cable.

Since the print cartridge isn't moving then try the following with the top open. With the power on, gently push against the carriage in either direction. If it doesn't fight with you, the belt may be either off a pulley or torn. If it does fight, then either you have a stuck gear, a bad motor, or even a bad signal from the board issue, hopefully a little wiggling will free this up and get it working again so give it a good run for your money. Look for any broken or torn wires and parts at this time if it still isn't working. If you still don't find anything wrong and it isn't working, then it may be time to take it to a shop or replace it. Let me know how this turns out.

Since you are running out of options, in case it is a software problem, you could try uninstalling the driver, and then reinstalling it. I would also try downloading any updates off of the canon website. After all of that, in case something is loose, just give the printer a good shake side to side. Then you could look up a local printer repair shop and see what they will say about looking at it. Let me know how this turns out. I'm sorry if it ends up that you have to get a new one.

My Canon MX310 alarm light is on - ink reservoir is almost full. I cleaned the reservoir and have tried the above procedure to clear the alarm but it hasn't worked. How do I clear the alarm?

Dear
You can reset the waste ink tank counter yourself. Be aware that this doesn't actually empty the waste ink tank itself but it does allow you to continue printing.

1: Power off printer
2: Hold Resume button then press and hold POWER, the beeper will sound once.
3: Hold POWER and release RESUME
4: Press RESUME twice, then release all buttons
5: When the indicator lights steady, press RESUME three or four times. The indicator should be orange.

Thanks.

Cannon MP830 Printer purchased in July, 2007. Was working fine until yesterday. suddenly when printing from PC get "Service Error 5C10 and printer alarm light begins blinking". When trying copy -...

It is one of two things.

a bad ink cartridge (the chip located on the gold part of it)
or
bad USB cable.

IF you have a spare cable simply change them out.

If you are refilling your cartridges, it is time to replace them.
