I guess, by reading your question, that the iPad 2 have the latest IOS (9.3.5). Most of this problem are related to the IOS firmware, it is simply terrible for a device with just 512mb. of memory. Next time it freezes, just press home and power button until you see the Apple logo, once the logo is display, let go of the buttons.
Press and hold the power button for fifteen seconds, ignoring any prompts. Does the unit shut off then? If so, release and then press and hold the power button for two or three seconds until it the unit starts to reboot.
I'm not sure what I did that unlocked the keyboard, but I was finally able to turn off the green light. I tried rebooting and pressing all sorts of buttons, but the one that might have worked was the 'end' key.
