Why is my washer letting water escape at drain hose when filling but stops when it starts to agitate

highly normal for top loader model washers of the old age since it is relative to the level of water being placed into the wash basket of the washer and only drains as the drain pump is being used

Winterizing a Washing Machine

If you keep your washer in area where you need to winterize for the winter (unheated garage or unoccupied vacation home), the following steps may provide you with some helpful guidance in preparing before extreme temperatures occur and possibly leave you with damaged plumbing and/or a ruined appliance.<br /> <br /> <b><u>TOP LOADERS</u></b>:<br /> <br /> 1. Turn off the main water supply to both water taps.<br /> <br /> 2. Remove the fill hoses, drain them of all water and reinstall them - leave water supply turned OFF.<br /> <br /> 3. Add 1 gallon of Recreational Vehicle (RV) antifreeze (non-toxic) to an empty wash tub.<br /> <br /> 4. Select the DRAIN/SPIN function on the timer and allow the washer to run for one minute to drain the antifreeze from the wash tub, and any water remaining in the drain pump or drain lines. <br /> <br /> NOTE: Not all the antifreeze will drain. A small amount will remain in the drain pump and line (this is normal).<br /> <br /> 5. STOP or CANCEL the timer on the washer and UNPLUG.<br /> <br /> 6. Wipe down and dry the wash tub.<br /> <br /> 7. Clean the detergent dispenser and fabric softener dispenser and ensure they are dry.<br /> <br /> 8. Store washer, unplugged in an upright position.<br /> <br /> <br /> <b><u>FRONT LOADER</u></b>:<br /> <br /> 1. Select the DRAIN/SPIN function on the timer and allow the washer to run for one minute to drain the antifreeze from the wash tub and any water remaining in the drain pump or drain lines. <br /> <br /> NOTE: Not all the antifreeze will drain. A small amount will remain in the drain pump and line (this is normal).<br /> <br /> 5. Press PAUSE/CANCEL twice to halt the cycle and UNPLUG the appliance.<br /> <br /> 6. Wipe down and dry the wash tub.<br /> <br /> 7. IMPORTANT: Check the perimeter of the door bellow (gray rubber seal) and make sure no small articles of clothing are left in the rubber folds. Clean this area thoroughly and dry. NOTE: Anything left behind will mildew over a period of time causing foul odors.<br /> <br /> 8. Clean the detergent dispenser drawer of any remaining water or fabric softener residue.<br /> <br /> 9. Store washer, unplugged in an upright position.<br /> <br /> <b><i><u>Secondary Method</u></i></b>: <br /> <br /> If you cannot find RV antifreeze (or prefer not to use it), another method of draining the washer is to remove the drain hose from the standpipe at the wall and pull a vacuum on the line with a wet/dry shop vac. This will pull any remaining water from the drain pump and lines. <br /> <br /> If a shop vac is not available, lowering the drain hose from the standpipe to the floor will allow it to drain using simple gravity. <u>IMPORTANT</u>: On a front loader, you may have to remove the drain line from the drain pump to drain the pump. Or, use the access cover (if equipped). Most front loader pumps are accessed by removing the lower panel directly below the door.<br /> <br /> <b><i><u>Taking the Washer out of Winter Storage</u></i></b>:<br /> <br /> To remove antifreeze from the washer following storage, run the appliance on a complete cycle with detergent and NO garments added.<br /> <br /> I hope you find this information helpful. My Kenmore 500 top loading washing machine wont work right. sometimes it will work and other times it wont. I will put a load in it and sometimes when it hits the rinse cycle it seems like it gets stuck...

for the top loading washing machine mostly have drain pump, please check the filter of your drain pump, if clog your drain pump of some hair pins, cotton buds or coins or any small item, that the cause of water stuck, and it will long time draining or totally not running the drain pump.and its cause of stop of cycle of washing machine in rinse time or spin time, because after washing the pump must be on to remove water before start the next cycle.and the unit top load have drain pump you must be up the drain hose up to 90cm from floor lever to make the water lever is make in normal, the water automatically goes out by drain pump.
and for unbalance most of all top loader have problem in unbalance, the main reason is overload or the type of cloth you wash.

Water keeps clicking of after 5 sec same with draining water and drum wont sprin

Hi Robert.

If the machine fills with water and cycle starts but it does not spin and drain, then possible problems are drain hose, drain filter, pressure switch and less frequently pump.

Before advancing to spin the timer board performs a test on drain part of the cycle, stops the drain and checks the door lock. Drain system, pressure switch and lid switch are all parts that if defective may cause no spin.

The first part to be tested is the drain system. This must be checked regardless of the fact that the pump is working. If there is blockage, residual water in the drain system or water flowing back from drain hose may cause the washer not detecting that drain is complete, and not advancing to spin.

Disconnect power and check the drain system, accessing drain filter and hose connected to the drain pump.
In most front loaders this is accessed removing the trim at the base of the front side of the appliance (under the door), and rotating the filter cap counterclockwise. The filter should be located behind the trim at the base of the washer.
Top loader usually offer access to pump either from back or from the bottom of the appliance. In some case (eg.Kenmore top load) you have to lean the machine forware to gain access to the bottom part of the unit, where the pump is located.

After opening the pump hose cover be prepared to collect a good amount of water. Keep a container at hand. Ensure that power is not connected before starting.

Also double check drain hose at the back of the appliance, and check that the elbow height is as prescribed in manual. Incorrect drain hose settings may result in syphoning, that means water is flowing back from drain hose into the washer tube. This may result in no spin.

After performing the check on the drain system test washer again. Sometimes removing eventual blockage in drain pump may fix this kind of problem.

If the pump is draining, but drain doesn't complete, and if there is no blockage in drain lines, a parts that may be causing the no-spin problem are pressure switch and door latch switch.

The door latch switch is checked by electronic control before advancing to spin. The door switch is tested running a cycle with the door switch contacts jumped. If the model has a lock motor more testing is needed. In that case the switch is tested ensuring that the lock motor impedance reads according to specifications and energizing the lock motor.

If the drain stops always at same point and cycle does not advance replace also the pressure switch. The pressure switch detects water level and determines when drain is over and when to advance to spin. This part is difficult to test in full, the part is not expensive and it is usually replaced without testing. Pressure switch is a common failure causing no spin. If drain is OK, then either pressure switch or lid switch/lock system is usually responsible.

If the above is OK , with top loaders you need to add to the list the problems related to motor and transmission. In front loaders, check problems related to motor and motor control unit. Such problems will be near to the end of the troubleshooting list. Check them before deciding to replace the electronic control.

Always disconnect power cord or trip the circuit breaker before performing maintainance operations.

If you need to contact a qualified technician, call the phone number listed on the owners manual.

Will not fill with water goes right down the drain, works sometimes

Your drain line is too low or there is a air gap blockage.
Remove the drain line from the drain and hold it up high while filling with water and see if it fills and stops.
If so, correct the drain line problem. The drain hose should be 36 inches from the floor.

It sound like you drain hose is siphoning off the rinse water, It needs a standpipe make sure the drain hose is at about the height of the top of the washer, Make sure the drain hose isnt stuck in the drain it also needs an air cap. the drain hose should not lay on the floor to run to the drain

Please let me know if this doesnt solve your problems
