Check with the spark plug manufactuer's online catalogue for the correct gap.

The contact breaker gap is 20 thou.

What should the spark plug gap for magneto be on an autolite 216


I see anywhere from .030" (.76mm) - .035".. the smaller gap will be easier for the magneto to fire...and probably run better at low speeds..

You did not post any information about the motor. There is a specific gap between the magneto and the flywheel and also the flywheel has a woodruff key to make sure the timing is correct. Check for spark, check gap on magneto and check magneto if you don't have spark.

Need more model information to be accurate and the manufacturer's recommended gap isn't always the best gap for different spark plugs.

In the absence of technical information for the engine the recommended plug gap in the spark plug manufacturer's application catalogue will be the best for that product.

A typical gap for a 2-stroke spark plug with a standard low energy ignition system is in the region of 22 thou. A high energy system will spark across a bigger gap but the spark is typically weaker at hand cranking speeds and so a smaller gap (24 to 28 thou) is still needed for easy starting unless the ignition system is battery powered rather than by magneto.

Need gap specifications


The gap between the flywheel and magneto (pick-up coil) is not that critical, if your engine is not running right or won't start. 2 to 3 mm is fine. The key point is that the gap be uniform in the arc where the fly wheel passes it. Please post your symptoms and we can better assist you on the forum. If you are not getting any spark from the plug wire... check this at night by unplugging the plug boot and pulling the cord and watching; if you can't detect a spark... then you have a magneto issue or a bad spark plug wire. A little crokus cloth to rub the rust off the entire flywheel edge surface will help. Don't sand down or apply solvents to the magneto surface even if it's rusty!

u could have a bad magneto, or u may need to check the gap on the magneto and the gap on your plug. pull plug and insert plug into wire and rest on top of head an pull starter to see if u get spark. if not, u need to check your magnetos gap.

What would cause no spark? the mower is a masport 8/02 two stroke. Will not start and I have changed spark plug and cleaned every thing but still nothing.


Your spark plug wire may be damaged, or your magneto may be too weak to generate a spark. You also have a kill switch wired to your magneto, and a condensor. I would start by cleaning the contacts of the magneto and then check the gap between the magneto and the flywheel. The gap between the flywheel and magneto should be .010". I would start by checking the kill switch wire for damage. If any damage is suspected, replace the kill switch. Next, I would have the magneto tested or replaced. Also, check all your ground wires for damage, or loose contacts.

When you are checking for a spark, you should have the spark plug installed in the spark plug wire as normal, but not installed in the engine. The spark plug base should be grounded to the engine while trying to start and checking for a spark. If there is a weak spark, this is probably due to a worn magneto.

It all depends on the model of engine. If it is a twin engine doesn't it have two magnetos.Very unusual for both to go bad It will depend on the type of ignition(points or solid state) The wire going to the magneto could be the kill switch (kills when grounded) Disconnect it and see if you get spark. IF so then it is in your safety/ignition circuit. If you replace magneto usually the gap is .008-.012

Spark plug gap is .025

As for the air gap in-between the flywheel, and magneto, I generally start with a piece of notebook paper in-between them.

After the bolts are snugged down, turn the flywheel by hand to spin the paper out.

No spark on Mc Culloch 110 saw


Remove the stop switch wire from the switch and check for spark (use a clean spare plug and the plug base touching engine metal), If nothing, trace the wire back to the ignition coil looking for worn insulation. Is this a magneto model or an all-in-one module? If a magneto, there should be points and condenser--check points gap (about 0.015") and condition. Check the core gap to flywheel magnets (I use card stock to set the gap). Try to wiggle the flywheel to check for crankshaft bearing looseness. If the ignition is an all-in-one module, check the core gap to the flywheel magnets. Otherwise replace the module. Hope this gets you running.

Alright, remember that 2-Stroke motors are meant to do 2 things:
Break down, then Frustrate you.

So, here we go: (Electrical)

Rotor Magnets, Magneto (ignition coil), Spark Plug Wire, Spark Plug, Spark Plug Ground (Cylinder Head).

In that order!

Check your "fire" from the Magneto:

1. Check your Kill Switch. In other words, leave everything normal, and unhook it. Did she start? Kill Switch it is! Kill Switch/Wire comes from the Magneto (single wire/ground) to the Switch itself. So check that wire AT the Magneto (Is it loose and grounding out? Is the Kill Switch grounding you out where it is, because of crud, junk, or because it is touching the block when it is not supposed to?)

2. Check your Spark Plug Wire. Easy, unook it from the plug, stick your finger in, give it a crank (non-MultiMeter way). Did you get shocked? Then it ain't your Plug Wire and Magneto!

With a Multi-/Volt Meter, simply hook her up, and check for juice WHEN you pull the rope. If you got juice, it ain't your Plug Wire or Magneto!

Checking Spark the "normal" way: Grab the Plug with a pair of insulated pliers, hold the plug end against the cylinder head, and pull your rope. Any Spark? What color?

3. STILL no fire. It leaves: Magneto and Plug Wire.
Luckily, they are both in the same place! Tear your blower down, and check to see if the Magneto has slipped out of place (gap is WAY out), or if the Plug Wire has worn to the point it is grounding you out. While you are there, check your Kill Switch wire, to see if she is grounding you out then and there.

4. STILL no fire. That means: Magneto Failing, or Magneto JUNK.
Buy another one, replace it! (Or steal one from another junk Blower/Weedeater. These things are fairly standard, and easy!)
Or, Bad Plug Wire. Meaning she has failed out on you.
Wait......that means: Replace your Magneto! Lucky the things are built together right?
